If your building one I would ask the riflesmith your using. I have had both and the one I have now is a WBY built by Rich Reilly at HT Custom in Colorado (IIRC) and it's a shooter but my old 300WM was on a Ruger MKII with a Shilen CM tube and it shot as well but 100fps slower. Pretty much same-same.
Winny is cheaper for brass and uses a little less powder. It is also known to be accurate. PS- Don't listen to the folks who say the neck is too short on the Win Mag or the guys who say the freebore in the WBY makes it inaccurate.

If you want more than the Win. Mag., you might as well go Ultra Mag.

Load for both. Every rifle I've ever owned in either is very accurate....The Weatherby costs more in powder and brass. Personally I would go with the Win as it's more than enough.

To me the 300 wby begs for 200 grain bullets. So if you are going to shoot heavy bullets I think the wby is the answer. If not you will give up very little by shooting the win. However,I like blargon's idea of the 308 Norma/30-338.

I have both and both are great.
If selling one, I would probably keep the Weatherby, an improved .300 H&H. I like the Weatherby because if in a bind I could shoot H&H ammo in the rifle. And...if in a real bind, I would shoot .300 Win. ammo in rifle, which would result in a fire-formed .300 Weatherby case with a really short neck (though, I have never done this nor would I make it a habit).

If you want more than the Win. Mag., you might as well go Ultra Mag. This is mostly my line of thinking. I played with a 300WM A-Bolt for awhile, lengthening the throat, using a 375 H&H magazine, long OAL in quest of 'max MV.' I had fun but wound up with my present small group of 300 mags instead: a 300 WSM-light, powerful enough, accurate; a 300RUM- carries the freight, esp with 200 grain bulets-if I need something bigger than the RUM I'll use a medium not another 300 Mag; and a 300H&H - no rational explanation of virtue except an emotional attachment to tradition any rifleman would understand. The 300 WM IMO is a good compromise for a handloader and a great one for someone who only shoots factory ammo.

I am not fond of long heavy big game rifles. Now they are fine if they are a 'truck' gun and used nearby or a varminter.
It seems that I lug the heavy rifle all over the place and a shot never comes or so it seems.
I would look at a lighter gun in 300 WSM and get a better cartridge case that way for handloading too.
