Any premil 99 or 1899 peep sight. grin

Lyman's, Marbles, Redfield's are the most common. Tang or receiver sights, all the 1899's and 99's up to 1959 had factory holes for them.

Here's some of the tang sights: http://www.savage99.com/tang_sights.htm

Williams FP 99
It's what I would use.
I'm sensitive about adding un-needed weight to my rifle.
The Redfields and such are heavy.

Check out eBay, Gun Broker, Auction Arms, gun shows and old well established gun shops that might have some old stuff hidden away. I would rank M99 receiver sights in the following order:

Lyman 57SA
Redfield 80LH
Lyman 56
Redfield 70LH (which came from the factory on later M99RS's)

Williams anything (made out of pot metal)

There are others available such as Pacific etc. but what's listed above are the most common. Others opinions may vary. Of the sights listed about the Williams will be the least expensive in most cases. Just remember that you get what you pay for. wink

Marble still makes the tang sight for the pre-1960 99s. Available at Midway. $125, but they seem to be on sale periodically for $99.

What's with all this Williams bashing?

They make stuff out of aluminum - so what?

Their old reciever sight that uses the tang holes works fine and is lightweight and used to be real cheap. Not as cheap now but still not as pricey as the Redfields and Lymans.

I have a question about this williams

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=110242659

can it be used on a pre mil factory d&t rifle with out getting in the way of the cocking indicator?

I ask because I sent tbjohn a lyman peep that screws into the scope holes, and it didnt work for him because it covered the cocking indicator.

Im guessing , based on Your sugjesting it Jed, that it will work fine, but Id hate to see him have the same trouble again.

I believe the Williams is relieved for the cocking indicator in that model. Price seems a little steep though.

That's not the original Marbles tang sight though. Its a modern design. The old ones weren't adjustable for windage. Because of that the new one may be more functional but it lacks tradition and is wrong if you want the proper period look. Decisions, decisions! Look or function? wink grin

What ever knocks your socks off! As long as your happy with them!
But they are still junk, and don't belong on a 99. Just my opinion.

I use what works.
It's a fact that the Williams work. Not just my opinion.
Them new Marbles sights are what DON'T belong on a Savage.
