So did you make a decision and find a seller you feel "secure" with? If so what did you end up with???

Tim,

As usual I think you're spot on. I'm still traveling and limping along on the smartphone, but will respond here AND get you the Sandvik data as soon as I get home.

Sorry again for the delay on that.

Buck Mini Alpha Hunter which is S30V steel. $90 6.25 OAL, 3.6 Ounces, 2.5 inch blade

The Benchmade Activator+ which has D2 $110 8 inch OAL, 5 Ounces, 3.6 Inch Blade

The Benchmade Activator D2 Steel- $90, 5.5 inch OAL, 2.4 Ounces, 2.1 inch Blade

What do you all think?

As I said it will be for field dressing. I like D2 but im wondering if it will be harder to sharpen then the S30V which the buck comes in.

All lifetime warrenty's.

Benchmade make good knives I know, and Buck has been around forever. Looking as to what you guys think!

I am not a fan of Bucks s30v heat treat but s30v will hold an edge longer than d2. Benchmade has the 210 Activator in S30V which trumps buck any day of the week. My first one has seen so many fish; it has to be in the hundreds without touching the stone. Its a small knife; I like larger profile for serious work.

What is it you dislike about Buck's heat treatment? I think Paul Bos does Buck's heat treating. Bos is pretty well regarded in the industry as a leader in the field.

They do their own only follow steps developed by Paul Bos. My only chipped edge came from a buck.

I met the president of Buck several years ago, at least I think he was the president. His last name was Buck, but I don't remember his first name. He was willing to answer questions and I had a nice discussion with him about Paul Bos and heat treating.

Paul does not do all of Bucks heat treating. Buck turns out too many knives for one man to keep up with. I think he might have helped develop Bucks heat treating.

What Mr. Buck told me is that Paul personally heat treats all of the custom ordered and custom made Buck knives, in addition to the knives from many makers around the country.

Someone here mentioned an inexpensive Scandinavian sandwich steel blade a month or so ago. It doesn't have a wood handle, but for the price it had a BUNCH of followers.

I've had a Kershaw that's been just dandy for a deer to two without any touch-up. I didn't bother trying to shave afterward, but I usually use an electric blade for that.
