It's always said that .308 has the advantage of shooting cheap military surplus, but I have two comments on that. First, there ain't no such thing anymore! Second, the one .308 I tried that with would lock up the bolt something fierce with milsurp.
My opinion is that they are both wonderful, practical calibers and we are blessed to have the choice.
The CENTER will hold.

Thankfully the creation of the 260 Rem has ended this argument. Thank you for coming. God bless.

But against factory 7-08 at $25 a box?

You don't get to use the wonderful 120grBT in the 308..... True, in 308 you only get a 125, 150, 165, 168, and 180 Ballistic Tip. It really limits a guy, but I'll make-do somehow OK, since we house-bound hunters have time for ballistic minutia, 'splain me this-----------how is the .270 an "'06 Improved" given the insanely large selection of projectiles for the '06, and the fact that both require dots or turrets past 350-400? The .284 bullet selection is greater than the .277, and the BCs typically higher. SO, (you can see where I headed), doesn't that make the 7-08 at least a .308 Improved, and to a slightly greater (minutia) degree than the '06 Improved? Does the .270 get a pass just because it's got seniority and JOC's endorsement? I'm not blind to the fact that we're splitting hairs here, and any one of a half dozen cartridges in this "group" will perform equally on game. I'm just trying to fuel some intelligent debate.

Deer and smaller 7mm-08 Deer and larger 308 WRONG! 7-08 can be had for about 14 a box..You can get the Serbian stuff. If you reload the 7-08 will out do the .308 due to the better BC bullets in 7mm. You will need to have a wyatt box to accomadate the longer bullets. Like they say, buy what you like

I vote 308, in which one can use the 130 TTSX and have fun!
On a more serious note, I vote 308 because I can buy cheap Rem CoreLokts and WinPP on sale at WalMart, send in for the $5 a box rebate, and shoot for the price of handloads, with good brass left over.

I prefer the 7-08 in my hunting rifles and 308 in my military rifles.
The biggest reason to choose one over the other is bullets YOU have on hand. If you have 1/2 boxes of various weights and brands of .284 bullets, it would be silly to start over with a .308
If you have a 280 and a 7mm Rem mag that you reload for, I would pick a 7mm-08. Likewise, I you are a 30-06, 300 magnum kinda guy, I would get the .308.
The cheap days of mil surplus are fading fast and essentially over and is less and less of a reason to go with a 308.
7-08 ammo in my little corner of Alabama is plentiful.
7-08 vs 308 is a fun choice because you cant pick a loser.

Ok, guys and dolls, Ive watched this thread for several days now, so now Ill add my 2 cents worth. TWR, you havent missed a thing. IMO there isnt a dimes worth difference between the two. Which would I pick? Neither one. Why? No rational reason, I just prefer cartridges older than I am, based on Mauser cases and 06 cases. TWR, my advice is pick the cartridge you like best in a rifle that fit you well and move on and have fun. The Ol' Man said, "Son, don't brag to me about now long a shot you made! Brag to me about how close you got!"

Which one do you like best and why?
I've been told how much flatter shooting the 7-08 is but just can't see it. 308 seems to me to be a more versatile med game caliber. What am I missing? Oh, oh, oh............can I play? You ain't missing nuthin'. The 7-08 does not shoot substantially flatter than the 308. Flatter though? Yes... Enough to really matter? No... 308 is much more versatile, too. I have one 308 now, and used to have a couple of different 7-08's. I won't own another 7-08, either. Nuthin' wrong it; it's just that why would I need one when I already have a 308?

Like I mentioned b4, both are wonderful rounds that are user friendly and eager to please.
However both will need turrets and or dotz to go to range...

You don't get to use the wonderful 120grBT in the 308..... True very true, you don't get to turn a 7/08 into a Roberts....gack gack gack Dober Mark, Certainly we conceed that there is overlap in terms of effect of various bullets/cartridges on game or in the air. However there is a difference. I really enjoy knowing that advantage or difference if you will. My anguish over being stuck with the 270 WSM in my Montana over the 7mm WSM that I now wish I had is not gack but FACT. The 7mm will allow the sleek Berger 168 VLD and what would you shoot in a 270 WSM at range to reduce the greatest and most difficut variable, wind drift, a 140 gr BT in the .277"?? In a 20 mph breeze at 500 yds the 7mm will drift only 26" and the 270's pill will drift three feet! = 36", a yard. Thats a 10" advantage for my 7mm WSM. Thats ballistic fact. http://www.eskimo.com/~jbm/calculations/calculations.html

In reality, the only thing the 7-08 was, is, and more than likely always will be is just another way for Remington to try to sell more product. They all do it; e.g., give us more product, in this case calibers, that aren't really needed in order to stay alive. Case in point, look at all of the new WSM and WSSM offerings that are out on the market now. Who "really" needs them? (flame away...)

Anguish? How often are yo shooting at those ranges in that much wind at game? "Never" would be the appropriate answer here...
