I'm thinking about buying an(other*) accurate .308 Win rifle for target shooting, playing, etc. I already own A 700 Sendero SS fluted bbl. in .300 Win which is quite acccurate, so I'm considering the Rem 700 Police (with HS, alu bedded, stock). Any experience, pro & contra ? *A few days ago, my wife made a remark about the fact I hadn't bought a new rifle since last year. So, who am I to contradict such a brilliant woman

I had one of the Rem. 700 LTR's in 308. It was a great shooting rifle, and would put 5, 168 grain Sierra's in way less than an inch. Got bored with it and sold it to finance somthing I couldn't live with out. Big mistake.... Virgil B.

I've got a PSS in .223 that is boringly accurate. 5 shot groups around 1/2" at 100yds regularly and a couple of 3 shot groups in the .19-.25 range. I paid $650 for mine used with a trigger job, sold the stock on eBay and bought a used McMillan to put it in until the A5 for it shows up. Figure I'll have less than $1000 into it when it's all said and done and it will outshoot a lot of custom jobs.

I used a stainless VSSF in .308 as the basis of my tactical rifle and all I did was swap out the HS stock for an A2. Im running the original Rem barrel and still getting .6" at 100 after 8000 rounds(ok 8014 but whos counting). I have used the same load since the beginning and when new it was running about .45-.5 so I guess its starting to open up.

So, who am I to contradict such a brilliant woman I have a Remington 700 LTR .308 20" bbl, on which I had Iron Brigade Armory do their deluxe action tune. Rifle, Leupold Mk4 3.5x10 scope weighs 9 pounds 12 ounces. It was boringly accurate before the tune up, now it is smoother and more durable! It is a bit heavy for hunting. Mike Fletcher

Andre,
I bought a Sendero in 300 Win Mag this spring... and about 6 weeks ago I bought a M700 Police in 223 to go with it. So we are running on parallel tracks here!
My 700P is very accurate; I have not had time to do much detailed loading for it, but it'll stack 69-gn Sierra's into .75" at 100 yards easily. I'm sure if I futz with OAL and so on, it'll do better still. I put a Jewell trigger in mine but it's otherwise stock. I'm running a 6x18 Loopy on it because I intend to use it pretty much exclusively for long range shooting.
I have found it to be an EXCELLENT cross-training platform for my Sendero, since they have identical ergonomics.

I've had a 700PSS in .308 Win for several years now and could shoot 3/4" groups with almost any ammunition. Handloaded Sierra 168 gr. BTSP from Redding Competition dies, a Tubb lightweight firing pin & spring, and a Jewell trigger got the shooter (ME not the rifle)to 1/4"-3/8" at 100 yds. Now I have to shoot at 300 to 500 yards in the wind to keep from getting bored! :-)

I purposely tried to lighten up the 700 POLICE by a few ounces to serve as a 'civilian' type of rifle vs. a 'sniper' type. It was and is intended to be a 'sharpshooter' for a civilian in a rainy, wet environment. Not a heavy-duty military/police style of gun. I went with a 1" scope in low rings and a flat base. No 30mm, extra-high, canted, etc. for me. Just a different take on this kind of gun. It shot 1/2" or better with Gold Medal Match in the factory stock. I'm happy with my take on the gun, only I may consider skinning back the bbl. from 26" to something a bit less...taking suggestions here, if you like! 700 POLICE / .308 in its original form, plus the XP-100R / .223 In the HOGUE pillar bedded stock, with the Bushmaster V-MATCH 24

The PSS's that I have had and the present LTR that I run with have all been excellent [sub moa] rifles for the bucks.
My LTR is becoming one of my favorite 'go to ' guns as it does a lot of things VERY well.

Chopping 6" off the bbl. would almost give me the LTR...hmmmmmmmmm.
