Saw a nice deal on a Remington 742 Carbine (30-06), but noticed it had a recessed crown at the muzzle (counter bored 1/8").
If anyone has experience as to whether that is factory or modified I would appreciate it?
Sights looked like stock location.
Thanks in advance.
Sav

I'm betting on it being modified... I've never seen a 742 with anything other than a 'hunters' crown...

Define ' nice deal'.. And, did you take a good close look at the receiver rails for chatter marks?

$300 in 96%+
No, I didn't look at the rails.
After researching this I would probably stay clear of it with a modified barrel and all.
Thanks

Do you really believe a recrowned muzzle will detract from this guns value? Recrowning a muzzle is considered a repair.

What Malm said. The gun has no collector value and is basically just a cheap using gun. Ask if you can shoot it and if it shoots OK and the price is right what do you have to loose.

If it had a repair there must have been a problem is my thinking. May not be a good enough deal to chance it, but still have it under consideration. not overflowing with funds to do something with either.
If I venture back I will look it over better and take rednecks advice.

I echo the others who said not to worry about the recessed crown.. A previous owner may have had that done to (hopefully) correct an accuracy problem..

But other things need to be considered besides that minor detail. The fact that this rifle has been obsolete for a while and parts are drying up; those that are to be had are going up in price rapidly.. Plus, they're not the most dependable rifles out there, and IF those rails are showing some real chatter marks, you will soon have a single-shot rifle unless you spend a bunch to convert it to a M760...

Savorino: 742 carbines wil say carbine on he barrel next to the model number. not too long ago i ran into a 742 rifle with a cut down barrel. bubba screwed up the drilling and tapping for the re mounged front sight so he/she silver soldered it on! maybe the previous owner had pitting in the bore near the muzzle. here we have mud bees that love gun barrels. they cause rust and pitting all the time. being that 30-06 ammo is cheap the gun was probably shot a lot and the receiver rails may be peened. at any rate if the gun works and is used for hunting only (a few shots a year) the gun should last many more years. good luck with whatever you decide to do!

It's my experience that people don't do work like that unless they are trying to fix a problem. Hopefully they were just trying to improve accuracy.
