Ok - had to try PS for a couple years. In that time, there might have been one good interesting article every other month.

No offense meant to Mule Deer, but while I enjoy his writing, I'm looking for something more technical than is currently found in Handloader and Rifle. Plus their ad content leaves me cold. I really don't need to know how to pick up women.

So, I'm wondering if Varmint Hunter or The Accurate Rifle might be the way to go?

Or, has my exposure to fora like 24HCF, AR, Benchrest Central and other quality sites pretty much ruined magazines for me?

Am I alone in thinking that the wave of the future of activity/hobby publishing may be something along the lines of a subscriber based online forum? Or are circulation numbers for magazines still holding their own?

Comments any(every)one?

Regards,
Scott

I really enjoy Varmint Hunting magzine even though I'm not an avid varmint hunter...there are usually more than 2 or 3 very good technical and semi-technical articles.

I also subscribe to both Precision Shooting and The Accurate Rifle and like you have grown tired on PS. AR is still spotty as far as I'm concerned as it still hasn't found it's niche. I don't really need the Glcok articles and the air rifle articles are only mildly interesting. I have enjoyed some of the interviews they've done and there seems to be a strong emphasis on Africa lately with Kevin Robertson in almost every issue. I would personally like to see more interviews and stories about, for want of a better term, nostaligic issues. I would also like a little more technical direction especially about what factors really have an effect on accuracy....and how much effect they really have.

One thing I really like about AR is if you send a letter with comments and/or suggestions, you will get a reasoned and thoughful response. I know they are hungry for stories a it would be an excellent opportunity for a freelance wriiter to get exposure.

I also miss the days when Rifle & Handloader were tops in the field.

I was a subscriber for many years at Precision Shooting and still value many of the old articles which I've indexed on the computer. About 2 years ago I came to the same realization as you so I switched the balance of my subscription to AR. It didn't do any better for me. I didn't renew. Besides the American Rifleman, which I get by virtue of being Life Member of NRA, the ONLY other magazine to which I subscribe in the gun and hunting field, is Handloading. I cancelled Rifle for the same reason as PS.

What I do is go down to the newstand, glance through magazines and if I find one article I like, I buy it. I've bought ONE magazine in the last year and when I got it home I was disappointed in content. I learn more from this and a couple of other boards in one day than I can learn from a one year subscription to most magazines.

I'll agree about the so-so articles in "Precision Shooting" and "Accurate Rifle." But, what really turned me off to both of them was the apparent lack of an editor. I've never seen such dismal lack of proofreading in any other publication, especially spelling mistakes. In the age of the computer Spell- and Grammar-Checker, that's inexcusable.

It would seem that most of their time and budget go into the cover photos (which are always nice), rather than actual content.

Currently, I just receive "Rifle," "Handloader," and "American Rifleman."

I'm a recent subscriber to Accurate Rifle, and when I suscribed, I bought all the back issues that they had on sale for winter reading. Should have saved my money for reloading components. I don't think I will be renewing as there just isn't enough interesting stuff on a regular basis to make it worthwhile.

Since I got on the net I don't buy any magazines. I still get the American Rifleman and American Hunter as my son and I are life members.

Also I have read so much that they are just the same thing over and over.

One can find topics on the net using www.boardreader.com

Free articles are at www.precisionshooting.com and use FindArticles.com like this one.

I agree, I've quit all magazines except for American Handgunner, which I still enjoy. PS, Rifle and the rest were often so dry I wound up reading the ads instead of the articles. I used to read Gun World, but without Dean Grennell it's just not the same. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
I guess it's a good thing we have these forums, eh? Else we'd probably give up on reading anything but the funnies!
