Crazy , seems you are about the only one that has had the lyman on an 88 . I assume the one I mentioned that fit the predrilled holes on the reciever.
If so , was there any wood that had to be removed for the sight to fit and raise up and down ?

M88 .308 WIN and 90 lb beanfield whitetail taken on 22 OCT 08 at 110 yards. Northern Dave, looks like we have the same rifle, right down to the Leupold M8 4x.

very cool.

I believe mine will be on white tail duty in a couple of weeks as I have donated my offset bases & rings for my bolt 30-06 to my oldest boy's rifle. I doubt the -06 will be together & sighted in again before season. so the 88 will be first in the batting order this year grin

Hey Northern Dave

I'll be in MN in a couple weeks at my in-laws with my M88 in .358. It sounds like there are plenty of deer.

Good Luck to you!

Tattoo: I picked one up 20 odd yrs ago, post 88,.308 w/Savage scope on it at the American Legion. A man wanted to swap it for a .357 mag pistol. I didn't have one but did have an early Colt .38 spl w/holster in my car. Went over his place, had a few drinks, and swapped even. I said: "If you ever want to swap back, I'll will."

Saw him afew weeks later, Wanna swap back? Nope-Nope! A deal is a deal, but you got the better deal than I did. I offered it back to him again the next time, ...Nope, A deal is a deal.

An Old WWII vet, I introduced him to a Singles Club. He never been before.. Boy, did that old white haired fox make-out. He had women treating him w/drinks, eats, future dates, sleepovers, man, he couldn't thank me enough after that. He felt EVEN now.
He's passed now to that great glorious Singles Club in the sky.

As for the 88, never shot a thing with it. Now sits in a backroom closet that I haven't seen it over l5 yrs. .. 99 LL ..

They are better using guns than safe queens. Take one out and see.

Dad bought a .308 in 1959. I still have it. I have killed a few deer and one elk with it. It has open folding sights, a Weaver peep and a scope on it.

The stock cracked due to a loose recoil lug so I had it glued back together and glass bedded. It has a Decelerator on it too.

It has a trigger job that really improved things. It shoots as well as most bolts. The magazine spring is getting soft though. I need to get a replacement magazine spring follower and a aftermarket magazine I suppose.

I like hunting with it. It reminds me of an ear;y Featherweight. It does have a lot of drop in the stock though.

shot my 88-.308 yesterday to verify that i'm on. Dang it, I'm getting 1.5 to 2" groups @100... I got an inch out of it last time I really tried hard.

maybe it's time to clean it.

oh well, for the ranges i will be hunting that will be tight enough. Can't wait, can't wait, can't wait!!

5 days & counting!!

Dad bought his 88 made in 59 new and is using it this year. I bought mine which is made in 57 almost 20 years ago for $250 with no clip. Found a mag used for ten bucks. Both are 308, both have Leupold 3X9's and are good shooters. I have emptied the magazine of mine into under a inch with reloaded Core-Lokts off a bench. Both guns have taken deer and elk both are sighted in with the same reloads. We can interchange clips that way, which can be advantageous at times.
90% plus of the time use my '06 700LH, but 88's are darn good rifles.

I bought a pre 64 in .308 a year or so back. Stock has little finish on it, But the bluing is nice , and it shoots very nicly.
It came with an old bushnell scope chief 2.5X8.
That old scope works real well, Have not hunted with it yet, but thats only cause I have 19 rifles.
I bought it just cause I love winchesters and had never played with one.
My only complaints are the strange spongy trigger, (mine is not to bad though)And its a little heavy.
The stock is rough enough I am considering taking the rest of the finish off and doing a hand rubbed oil finish.

Heading to MN tonight to put my .358 M88 to the test once again. Last time it accounted for a 4pt (WC)so we'll see what it will do this time. My wife will be using her 6.5x55. I hope she gets one too.

Picked up a post-64 88 with scope, case, rings, mount, three magazines for $350.00. Gun is in new condition and will generally put three rounds into an inch at 100 yards.
To my knowledge, except for the Win Model 70 and Model 94, little changed in the Model 88 following the 1964 debacle. Checkering went from hand cut to stamped. My point is that a post 64 model 88 should not be avoided.

Took an eight point buck with my M88 .308 on 10/24 - it was a bang/flop as well. I was using Remington Corelokt 150 grain factory loads that morning.

Very nice!!

I was using federal fusion 150's

she came in facing me, 30 yds, wouldn't turn for a shot. but from where I sat I had a good downward angle. So, as she faced me straght on I waited for her to drop her head to the ground for a bite of grass. When she did I put the cross hairs on the top of her neck between the shoulders & it turned out to be a very nicely placed shot. she went straight down & didn't wiggle. bullet traveled through the spine on the neck side of the straps, continued downward through the heart & exited through the center of the ribcage between her legs.

no meat wasted & it shut her off like a switch.

first time i have ever placed a shot in that way.

I had success with my M88 .358 opening day for the MN deer season. With about 10 minutes of shooting light left I downed a decent 5pt (WC). The shot was a lasered 180 yards with 225g Nosler PT. The deer went straight down.
