WyoJoe-I've always been sort of intrigued by that bullet, you ever used it on elk and have you ever found any in critters?

Thx

gotta love those Sako actions, I have a Finnlight in 3006, its an MOA shooter out of the box and one of the best triggers I have had the pleasure to squeeze. i will give the 9.3 'till after the new year and then look for what you have, although i like shorter barrels. I shoot my cousins 75 in 338 win sometimes and as far as recoil goes it is not worth discussing. I pcked up a 75 in 300wm last year and promptly turned around and sold it. methinks I wish I had it now and would rebarrel to a meaningful caliber.

Good write up brian and photos as well. I think if you run a tsx or fxb 270gr bullet you will be happy. The 37hh i sold a few years back was an old, but like new, C grade custom out of the Rem custom shop, it was a 3 shot MOA first load I picked, 74gr RL 15 and a 270 fxb for 2730fps. I shot 3 moose with it, one a calf, one a 4 point and the last a mature bull, mid 40"s on the rack. The last one gives credence to the 375 that no smaller caliber can match, I'm up late as I have had bad cold and need a neo citron, anyway, 5 yrs ago i was coming out of a cut at near dark, I glaced across an old grown up landing as I waent by and saw a moose face, so i stop expecting to see another cow, was seeing lots of cows, I looked at it and saw no horn in the twilight, so i looked through the 375's scope and all i could see was a mooses face until it turned and then saw the 1/2 rack, I pulled the rifle down and back and squeezed of a round, still could only see its face as it was behind a run of willows 80yds away. It went down hard and stayed there. It looked like a softball went through the heart. There is no lesser caliber that i would have taken that shot with, except maybe my whelen, but certainly no 30 caliber no matter how fast it was running. Big animals in tough conditions warrent big well constructed bullets, the 375HH does that and the shape of the cartridge lends itself to slick feeding in the rifles action, although sako's don;t need any help in that dept.

If you want to duplicate factory 300 gr loads , go with 76 to 78 gr of H-414 or WW 760 .

As far as the perfect N americano bullet I think we got it with the 260 accubomb.....despite the "bomb" moniker , they drill thru elk like swiss cheese .

My favorite for years(for NA)is the 250 Bitterroot and enough 4064 or RL15 to give app 2900 fps;I use the 250 Sierra for practice.A 250 Swift Aframe would be my choice today if I did not have the Bitterroots.

Used 74 gr RL 15 and WW LR primers (couldn't find Federal) with 270 gr TSXs on a plains game hunt this spring. Very accurate, very effective load.

In all seriousness, a boattail and a nylon tip could combine to add 100 yards of effective range to a 375 H&H - using Barnes bullets recommendations for suggested impact velocities. Barnes recommends over 1900 fps.

By comparison, the 260 grain Nosler Accubond - maintains that velocity for more than an extra 100 yards.

I just wish Barnes would add a boattail option and a tip to their 375 offerings.

Me too Brian, plus I feel that the tipped bullet would help to facilitate expansion especially at long range.

I haven't used it on elk but from the performance on deer & antelope I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

I have only killed one elk with a .375 & that was with a 270 gr Hornady Interlock. Never again! It was a calf & I hit it @ about 50 yards. The bullet disintegrated & never exited it's chest.

I know a guy who used one out of a .375 Ultramag on a buffalo here in WY. It completely penetrated the buffalo from side to side.

The 260 AccuBond is a VERY stout bullet, capable of pretty much end-to-ending elk or similar game. As with Partitions, they make the bigger AccuBonds tougher; I know of at lest two Cape buffalo that have been taken neatly with it, one with a frontal shot. It really flattens out the old round too.

I generally use around 70 grains of Reloder 15 with 260-270 grain bullets exactly how much depending on the rifle. This will get 2700-2800, again depending on the exact charge and the rifle.

Also about 75 grains of H4350 is good for the 300-grain. Muzzle velocity will be 2500-2600, again depending.

Another good load is the 220 Hornady flat-nose with 35-37 grains of IMR4227. This gets around 1900-2000 fps and can usually be adjusted to shoot to the same place as a heavy-bullet full-house load. This is not only pleasant to practice with but does fine on woods deer--and even prairie dogs. Essentially it's a modern .38-55 load.

I like RL15, my standard load for a few years has been a 270 North Fork with 72 grains of RL15, which goes 2770 fps in my Whitworth with a 24 in. barrel. I have pretty much always stuck with RL15 or 4064 in my .375's, but others have used 4350 and H414 with 300's. One of these days I'mgoing to try some Big Game since it works so well with almost all other medium bores.

In your opinion, would the .375 260 grain Accubond be a good choice for brown bear?

Thank you

JB,
I would like to hear your take on the Accubond also. I met a guy during elk season that had used one in his 375 Ultramag for a bison and I was thinking of trying them in my .375.

Brian, my .375 load - at least for now - is the 270-gr TSX over 77.5 grs. of H4350, Win cases and Fed 215 primers. It isn't hot in my rifle at 2670 fps. but shoots just fine. Here is a representative group and a bullet from a Burchell's zebra, the only one in seven on a Namibian trip that wasn't stopped.

I came to love the cartridge in my first and brief visit to Africa and came to understand why it is a classic based on it's history there.

Sorry, I can't get photobucket to deliver tonight but it shoots under 1" and my best group with it is .38" if that means anything and Barnes couldn't have wished for a nicer mushroom than this one TSX I've been able to recover.
