I have a 336CS that was scoped, but I'd like to keep iron sights on it. Which is better quality, the Williams fool proof or the Lyman? Will I need to get a new front sight? Should I? Thanks,
Kevin

Having tried both, I prefer the Lyman. It comes with a sliding scale on the side that can be adjusted for zero and scribed for different loads/ranges. They're a little pricey new, but I've picked a couple up used at gun shows for a fraction of the cost. At www.beartoothbullets.com under the 444 MArlin info, there are photos of how a scope base was modified so that a receiver sight or scope could be used on the same gun, depending on the needs of the moment. I've used williams sights & found them to work well for me, only thing is theyre aluminum. I believe the Lymans are steel.

kpmtns, I use an older steel Lyman 66 with a Lyman 17A front post. The new Lyman 66's are aluminum now like the Williams. There not anywhere near as good as the old ones which are steel. I shoot only receiver sights, thats what I learned on and now thats all these 60 year old eyes can see. You may find something on E-bay or GunBroker or at the next gun show at the merchandise mart in Denver on March 20-21. I'll be there at the Golden Gun Club Table on the 21'st. Stop buy and say hi. I'll bring my 38-55CB which has the Lyman 66 setup on it so you can see what it looks like. Don't feel obligated, just if you get a chance. Mick

I have a newer Lyman on my Marlin 336 in .35 Remington and a Williams Foolproof on my Marlin .45-70. I like them both, the Williams is a little slicker profile but the Lyman is easier to adjust and the slide is easier to remove on the Lyman. I don't think I had to change front sights on either rifle. I also have the old Redfield 70 and a Lyman 48 for some of my Model 70 Winchesters and the old steel construction is very hard to beat. Thanks...

KPMTNS, I just picked up a Williams 5D receiver sight on sale from Midway Supply for $26.95 plus UPS. It might not be as nice as you're looking for but you can't beat the price.
