Our Arkansas 2-day youth season was good to my youngest, with him taking this busted off 4-pt. We were in a box stand, talking about how bad the Rangers pitching was gonna be again next year when this guy showed up. Tyler made a perfect shot and our '08 season is off and rollin!

Of course, when you're 9 y/o you have to get back to the camp and call your best friend when you kill the first buck of the season.

After he called Hunter, it was time to go to work.

Great start to the season...

Ruger M77 MarkII in 243
I am liking that little rifle more and more all the time. I snuck it out last season one morning when the kids were going to school, and took a nice buck with it. Shoots great, very handy to carry and in a stand.
The 100 gr win power point took this buck through the neck and fell out the oppo shoulder when we dressed the buck. Stone dead before he hit the ground.

Is it the full size? I looked at the ultra-light with the 20" tube and the compact with the 16 1/2".

His is the little compact. I love the 3-position safety as well. I wish all my rifles had that.

Congratulations! My son and I hunt in AR around Prescott. I saw 2 off of my stand. Unfortunately he didn't get to shoot at anything from his. Hopefully we will correct that situation this weekend.!

Congrats! Looks like a fat buck and some good steaks to fry. Did you take a picture of the recovered bullet? If so, will you post it also? I've got a 1 1/2 old son and I can't wait until he's old enough to kill his first deer. I've been looking at going ahead and buying him a rifle and I've been looking hard at the .243 caliber. How would you rate it compared to like a .30/30?

Here is the recovered bullet. Sorry bout the lousy pic.
Distance was 40 yards.
Placement was thru neck, clipped bottom of spine, exited low an inch behind shoulder. Bullet fell out upon skinning.

As much as I love this 243, I am a big fan of the 30/30 as well. Both great choices imo. My son shoots his ruger better than he did my 30/30, but it also fits him perfectly. Recoil was about the same. Lotsa muzzle jump and a little pop with this short rifle.

Congratulations to you and your son on a lifetime memory.
Is that a Leupold 2x7 on the compact? I bought the same rifle a few years back for my girls since the younger one was seven and her sister eleven at the time. They have used that rifle to take several does and each their first buck. I even 'borrowed' it to take a nice buck out of a little box blind we built one year. It is a handy rifle. Thanks for sharing this event with us.

Mrbman, that is a Leupold 2x7. I thought that was the perfect scope for that rifle. It can handle any and all situations that we are gonna use it for.
I finally get a day off tomorrow, and I might just sneak it out and use it, instead of my 270 wsm.

Mr. sosowingshooter;
I see that I need to ask you to send one more congratulations, this time to your son for shooting the interesting racked and tasty looking whitetail.

Again, Ill send a tip of the hat your way as well, for taking the time to take your children afield with you.

I am confident you are sowing seeds that will result in a lifetime harvest of good memories for you all.

Thanks again,
Dwayne
