I thought this might be a good discussion. What is the reason you chose to buy your deer rifle in it's particular caliber?
Please keep it to a 2 rifle minimum.
I'll go first 336 Marlin in 35 rem, because I was hunting in the Adirondacks and that was what everybody I know there used and had success with.
Mod 7 in 308,because I was hunting PA farm land and I needed something that could reach across a field reliably that was light and it's in a "general store" caliber that I knew I could get almost anywhere.

chosen caliber? 7mm is at the top of the list ... 6mm a close second.
Chosen "cartridge"? anything between a 7mm-08 and a 7WSM ... followed closely by the .243win or .243AI ...
Deer are easy to kill, and the above mentioned chamberings will easily take down any deer on the planet while being an absolute pleasure to shoot ...

The state of Iowa pretty much chose the 12 gauge for me. Things have loosened up a little in the past few years and I am taking my Model 19 Smith along this year to use if the situation is right for it.

If I had chosen it would be a .270 which I believe to be the best deer caliber.
Me? I shoot an '06 with 180 or rarely 165 gr bullets.

6.5X55 I first got one back in PA in the late 80's, it was a sporterized Mauser liked it alot, then I got a Model 70 Featherweight and sold it like a fool. When I got married my wife had a Rifles Inc. built for me. It seems magical in its ability to kill deer DRT. I have never had one run away, ever. It recoils very little and loaded with Nosler Partitions, I'm set for everything in the lower 48, except perhaps Griz. It like the 30-06 have been around forever, and it just keeps chuggin along. Most importantly I like the look on guy's faces when they ask me what I'm shootin, unless they're loonies like the rest of us on the campfire, they kind of pretend they know what it is,but you know they're clueless. That's priceless!

5s,
The twenty gauge with sabots (Win Part Supremes 4 me) are not too shabby. Most 12 bore ballistics on boxes are pretty optimistic.
If you get practice enough with your 357 you'll find better accuracy than with the "old" style slugs!
Go late or get outta state with a rifle! (grins)
