Just to let y'all know, if any of you have them...no, they don't look natural no, you're not fooling anyone and no, they don't make you look younger.

Other than that, they may keep your head warmer.

Happy Thanksgiving.

If you are a 40-ish year old man, and your hairstyle involves bangs, you are kidding yourself if you think everybody doesn't know.

How is it that the "comb-over" has endured all this time? Does anybody really think this is an improvement over baldness?

Not women! Being a 53 year old male currently a full time college student, I can tell you my fellow nursing studeds have no trouble being flirtatious with me and my buzz, while I'm sure if I had a combover or a hair piece, I'd merely be the butt of jokes behind my back. Of course, I'm probably still the butt of jokes, but they ain't hair jokes!

We had a LCDR Weapons Officer who wore one while we were at sea. I mean come on! At sea for 113 days straight, and this clown is wearing his toup. He was a pen!s maximus as well, which didn't help his case.

The first port call after this 113 day stint were the Maldives, a muslim country which allowed hotels to build resorts on the various archipelagos surrounding the main island. He was having dinner in an outdoor cafe, when one of his troops ran by and snatched the piece from his head, revealing the velcro strips he used to keep it in place. Talk about a laugh riot!

The sailor went to mast, and was fined, but we all pitched in to make up the difference. It was worth it.

My take on this.

Fake is OK only if it works, i.e., is undetectable. If it can't be detected, fakeness is moot. That applies to, besides hair, other body parts.

If it is detected, well.....

What Fowler said about another matter (in Modern English Usage) certainly applies here

The obvious is preferable to the obvious avoidance of it.

When I was a cop I worked with a guy that was known as poodle in his younger days due to his kinky curly hair. He was proud of it too! LOL, one day the wind caught up under his "comb forward" and lifted it up like a big fuzzy car hood. I laughed and called him flip-flapper after that. It stuck too!

I started getting real thin about twenty seven or twenty eight, fought it with comb overs till I was in my late thirties, finally just gave up and have been shaved clean ever since other than the handlebar stach I go from my collarbone to the back of my neck and I am good. makes things a lot faster getting out of the shower as well.

When a colleague at the proving ground came to work wearing a "rug," he claimed that he'd got it to keep his head warm. That made sense, so I didn't razz him about it. Winter, 'n' all that, dontcha know.

But when summer came southwest desert and sweat ran out from under it, I razzed him about it. He couldn't say much, since I was balder than he was and not too bashful to show it.

How about the guys who use a color comb? I had a co-worker who used to go from mostly white haired, to a jet black pelt every month or two. It was a really weird, unnatural color too. If he got caught in the rain, he'd have black streaks running down his face. I don't know if it was a name brand colorant or some home-brew deal, but it was about the silliest thing I ever saw.

OTOH, my father's best friend maintained his jet black head of hair well into his 70s. He used to joke that he wished somebody made a silver wash, since nobody believed it was his natural color anymore. He finally went salt 'n' pepper, then mostly white, after he had a heart attack.

I don't know why people feel the need to conceal baldness. My hair is starting to thin out and I already know that I'm just gonna by some extra sunscreen and maybe a new hat and go from there.

Deal with it.

To tell you the truth, I think baldness looks good on men. I much prefer Sean Connery without a toupe and think he looks much better now than he did as James Bond back in the 60s.

I know men won't believe it, but it's true...

The critters need hair to keep warm. :-)

BTW, I saw three coyotes the other day w/o hair but they were a long ways from perfect!

Willard Scott, the weatherman, was one of those exceptions regarding toupees. I just loved it that one day he would be on his show with his bare head, the next time he was wearing the toupee. He pulled it off because he wasn't hiding anything. Quite a classy guy.
