I need some advice on a good option for a scope for a Savage 99E in .243. I hunt NH and it is thick! 100 yard shots are rare! I am looking to scope the rifle. Some low light situations due to tree cover. Leupold? Red Dot? Little help! thanks JC

LOL..... Just this morning I commented on wanted a 99 to put under this. Opinions vary, and I could be biased here, but I think this would be a perfect fit...and I do believe it is a good deal: https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbth...owflat/Number/2581533/page/3#Post2581533Take care, JCM

Nice! Thanks for the lead! I would need to know what base/rings would work. JC

Fatjack,
I use my 300 99 with a fixed 2 (or 2.5 I forget) old bushnell scopechief. It suits me fine for most of the NH hunting I do. The Scopechief is starting to flake inside and I need to send it back to Bushnell to see if there's anything they can/will do for me. If they can do anything (reasonably) I will be putting it back on the 99, if not I'll pick up a fixed 4x Weaver and will never look back.
Good luck and happy hunting.

It's good to lead - it's better to lead by example.

I have a number of 99's but all are unscoped & I'm not about to modify with a scope. If the rifle has already had provision for a scope I would go with a Zeiss or equal 4X with at least a 32mm, preferably a 40mm objective. I have a Swarovski with 24mm objective on a DGR & its not equal to a 6X42 for light gathering. Good hunting.

+1 on the bases and rings. My old 99EG in 300 Savage is scoped with a Leupold M8 6x36 which works fine in the doghair lodgepole thickets of the Rocky Mountain West. And that country is just as thick and dark as any of the wet woods I hunted as a kid in VT.
Pursuit may be, it seems to me, perfect without possession. Robert Kelley Weeks (1840-1876)

Weaver V-3, Leupold VX-II 1x4, both look right on a 99 and work even better.

I have several Boone Saturn scopes and a variety of bases. As far as I can see, the auxillary peep sight is the best and most useful part of a Boone scope.

I have a vintage Redfiled 2.5X. It fits well, but I think a gloss Vari X 3 or VX3 1.5-5 would be better. For some reason I cant put a matte scope on a 99, it just dont look right.

I have a Leupold 2.5X compact on my .300 Savage 99E and it works great! Another good Savage scope is the 4X Burris compact that has been know under several names including short mag and now I believe "Whitetailer." I use low Weaver bases and rings.

I've used an old set of Weaver bases & rings with an old post reticle K3 for some time on my "swiss rat" takedown. It works well and looks right.

Fat Jack, I've got a Weaver K 2.5 on my 1899 with a post and cross-hair recticle. It is mounted using a Stith mount the only way to mount a scope without D/T'ing extra holes. The scope is clear and works well in the dark wooods here. Tom
