Longest was a cow caribou. My .25-06 with 120 gr Speer handloads printed less than MOA at 100 yards, 5 inches high. There was a right to left wind, and the first round kicked up snow several feet below her belly, up there on that hillside. She was standing broadside, head right, with her head tilted back toward me. I moved the cross hairs (rifle resting across the shut-off snow machine's windscreen) to just above her upright ears. Right thru both shoulder blades... 3X on a 3-9 power scope...

Closest was a yearling bull moose at 16 yards. As he reached his head way up for a tidbit at the top of a brush clump, I saw his eyes bulge as he focused on me, kneeling in the grass some yards downhill. The gun went off....

The 270 grain .338 Speer GS took him just under the chin, nearly decapitating him, and flipping him right over backwards. I still have the scar between my eyes.... smile

Longest Shot:

  • 473 YDS, 270 Win, 130gr. TSX, Mule Deer, Excellent penetration, DRT

Shortest Shot:
  • 162 YDS, 270 Win, 130gr. ACCUBOMB, Whitetailed Deer, Poor penetration, massive, shallow bullet penetration. Broke onside shoulder and destroyed most of the meat. Did not penetrate to lungs. I had to shoot it a second time at about 140 yards after running for a better view to shoot it wounded.

The Accubond failed for me.

Elk (4X5) = length of my rifle with my arms fully extended ('06, Remmy, ADL, 180 gr. NP, 2 X 7 X 33 Leupy). When it fell, it's antler hit my boot. My brother spooked it right into me (PNW thick stuff) and crested a small mound only to see me standin' there with this elk on my boot. That will teach both of them to check the wind next time......oops....one of them anyway.

Spike elk = 526 yards, one shot, DRT. 300RUM, 200gr. NP, MV 3,189 fps., Remmy LSS, 4.5 X 14 X 44 Zeiss.

Funny everyone seems to have similar "longs" and "shorts".There a lesson here?

Furprick, that 400+ yard off hand shot is outstanding...I think I could hit a barn door off hand at that distance;anything smaller is safe....

LONGEST..... 10/21/'03 - Northwest of Cheyenne WY. Antelope buck..325 yds. with a .25-06 using a 117 gr. Sierra pro-hunter at 3125 fps. One shot; Bang....Flop..( Spined him ).

SHORTEST..... Nov.1990 - Way up a steep, wooded hillside in the finger lakes region of western NY state. Whitetail forkhorn buck. 18 steps away.. Remington 870 smoothbore 12 ga. with Winchester 2 & 3/4" Foster style slugs. One shot. And I had to wait for a doe to step out of the way to give me a clear shot at the buck. The doe was literally within spitting distance and I was on the ground and NOT up in a tree,(had the wind in my favor). Had a doe tag but had already made my mind up that I was gonna get that buck. one slug through both lungs and he still ran almost 100 yds. before he went down for good.

Longest shot.... A fork horn mule deer (my first) at 400 paces across a sage flat. I used a 308 Win. in a Remington 788 with a 4x tasco scope and was using 150 gr. Hornady handloads.

Closest....... A 5x6 mule deer at 35 yards with a .54 cal Hawken shooting 435 gr. Maxi's. The deer was spotted at 500-600 yards away in open ground and I managed close the distance to 150 and belly crawl to within 35 yards before making the shot.

The deer placed first in a big buck contest and I won a new muzzleloader.
