Sounds like it was quite the sight!
I saw something like that over southern Idaho back in the early to mid 1980s-IIRC it was a Soviet satellite burning up during reentry. Spectacular is the only way to describe it.

Wow, that was a good one. Last Friday night, I got to see the re-entry of the space shuttle, but is wasn't anywhere near as spectacualr.
