I started packing one of these along with my tablets this year, super light and compact:

Aquamira Frontier Filter

Have not had to use it, but the rep at Aquamira stated the river guides use them all the time, they just hang over the side of the boat and suck some water.

They work really out well. Much better than the bottle in my opinion.The flow is good. I carry a quart baggy to pick up the water. I do some S&S too.

The same outfit makes one that is "new and improved" too FWIW.

The only thing that I don't see is the Burt's Bee's Lip Balm....LifeGaurd formula if sunshine is in the forcast.

I've got 3 of them IIRC one each big pack and one in my hunting/daypack gizmo.

it actually pulls a bit easier than the original straw filter I had, guess since there's less distance to pull through the shorter filter.


it warns

"will not remove viruses or bacteria smaller than 3 microns, if suspect of either use treatment"

am thinking the drops that the same company makes could be the ticket or if someone can find one of the new and improved perhaps it filters smaller microns than the current filter.

I'll do a google and see what I can find out.

weighs less than an ounce and removes up to 99.9% of Ghiardia and Crypto

good for around 20 gallons, if I can move and stay hydrated, I can go a loong ways in 15 days, a gallon a day should see me through wherever I need to get to.

the new Pro Frontier shows promise though $20, 2 oz. dry, 50 gallon capacity and built in attachment to fit any platy or narrow neck water bottle, plus has pre filter disks for muddy water. since it attaches to the bottle you can use it as a gravity filter as well. I've stated often my pumping days are over, have a system that doesn't weigh much more than that but is bulkier, but I got better things to do than pump.

all in all sounds pretty good, gonna have to spring for a couple and give them the test run.

Will Badlands do this for a charge???

I have one of those little Gerber knives like the one in your picture. Mine has a plain edge rather than 1/2 serrated. I don't like carrying it because I always feel like my finger is going to run along the relatively-unprotected blade and get a nice, deep slice.

Was just looking through my "man purse" (what the boss-lady calls the leather bag I sewed up a few years ago) and I am surprised how different my stuff is than most everyone else's... Maybe it is just a geography thing - I live in the Colorado Rockies,so maybe that explains it.

Anyway, mine has:

A small pot inside a coffee can wood stove (also has a lighter, trioxane, and tea inside)
A water bottle
Swiss Army knife and sharpening stone (the kind that has a locking blade - use this for everything including field dressing elk)
Large poncho (can't stand the jackets and pants and if I'm alone is my shelter)
EMT Gel (dog owners will know this) and a small roll of gauze
550 cord (looks like about 20'
Trowel and some tp-like stuff (not tp, but that's how its used - kind of a baby wipe)
leather gloves
needle-nose pliers

Digging through a stuff sack in the bottom of the bag I also just found a large plastic bag (contractor?), a bit of pemmican, and a couple of large handwarmers

You might consider Ex-Lax instead of a trowel. It weighs less.

OK, so I'm thinking what we need to do is work our way past this step by listing all the items mentioned on this thread, and maybe make a poll out of it where we decide which of these are 100% mandatory in every foray away from camp/truck/trail.

Again, I want to start with the mandatories: What should you NEVER be in the mountains without.

If someone will make the list, I'll make the poll.

This year I added a Gerber micro LST tied to the pack zipper with cord. It weighs nothing, and it's good insurance IMO.
