tossing around the idea of a 6BR custom. I'd like a rifle that shoots awesome out to about 600ish yards on paper/steel, but is still light enough to pack around if I want to try and whack a coyote with it in the winter. (so 9-10 lbs scoped max)

I love Remington 700s, would the stubby BR case feed ok without any mods to the 700 SA? Single shot I could live with if I had to

What kind of twist? 1-12? 1-8? I guess Id like to shoot anything from 55-87 gr. What contour of barrel? Something with a bit of meat to it but not a bull barrel. Muzzle diameter of .7"ish??? Length of 25" would suit me fine

Stock? Maybe a Mcmillan classic, I have one on my 700 BDL 8mm mag and like it alot. Do up a swirly with 60/20/20 of white/dark gray/black???

Scope? 4.5-14x40mm VXIII LR with the 30mm tube and a M1 turret?

Thinking out loud here.........got no $ for it now so I got lots of time to think crazy

I like the 6BR for its low recoil, low powder consumption, good ballistics, and it is COOL cool I had a 243 last year but sold it, it was great, but Ive always wanted a 6BR

any comments or suggestions? grin

6BR, hands down, my favorite cartridge.
My Sako- the only one I seem to be able to keep- is perfect, feeds the rounds even quickly thru the standard short action magazine, is a real sub 1/2 minute sporter- best group @ 200 to date was .3something.
12 twist, but had I given it some more thought probably would have gone 10 twist..just 'cause.
With scope weighs 8.75 as you see it.

Tod, here is my example of a 6BR for calling. It is a #3 contour at 22" in a McMillan Classic stock topped with at 3x9x40 Leupold. Can't remember the weight, but just over 8# all up. I am working with Sierra 60gr HP's right now, but haven't got enough kills to determine if they are my go to bullet. I've killed a few with V-Max of various weight, but not real excited about them. The stock is tan/brown to blend in with our winter cover. The metal is mil-spec od with a couple of drops of black mixed in.

I am guessing you would like a 6BR and either some of the heavier Bergers or maybe the 87gr V-Max might be good for starters given the distances you want to shoot. Make sure you know the specs of the reamer you use as there are two to three groups of freebore ranges which are popular. Kind of depends on the bullets you think you might be interested in. Tod, this one has a 10 twist. I would go 9 or 10, this would allow you to shoot the 95gr Bergers also. I don't think it gives up anything and allows you more choices. I have another 6BR twisted at 13 and it limits the bullet options.

Are you guys running the SA 700 having to do anything special to get it to feed. I have the barrel and brass I just haven't got around to getting one put together yet. I seem to recall reading about feeding issues.

dodge, I have one on a SA700 which feed fine. The one in the picture is a Sportsman 78 and I had to do the Bryant magzine box overhaul on it to make it feed. If you have concerns, a 6x47 Lapua is another option....

No real concerns I just seemed to recall reading about feed issues and thought I'd ask. I'm going to build one eventually, I have almost 300 rounds of brass sitting on my bench along with a barrel I just have to get around to doing it, not having any experience with it I've been reading up on it and asking questions. It hasn't been a real priority, but it is definitely on the to do list. All those rifles pictured would meet my definition of a nice little packing around rifle.

Partgas, using any of these bullets, shot placement is everything. While varmint bullets are made to be explosive for a purpose, I just like a little tougher bullet. It is a fine line to get the balance I like for everything considered. I am probably too picky. Yep, this gun really likes the 58gr V-Max, but I'm still searching for something I like better on called yotes. I'm thinking the 60gr Sierra HP may be it, however, I need more field testing before I settle on it. I might try the 80gr Sierra Blitz some time as well.

I'm going 6x45 or 47 route for my BIG deer gun in states that don't allow the 223AI.

Mr. todbartell;
A couple years ago, I almost bought a 6x47 or 6x45 built on a Remington 600 for our girls. My late friend that had it also had the .250AI that I decided to pick up and work over instead.

I thought it looked like a useful cartridge, but I am not a big fan of the flat dog leg bolt. I believe it had an RKS barrel on it as well and I believe it was put together in Kamloops.

If that sort of thing would interest you, feel free to send me a PM and I can see if I am able locate it.

Good luck in your project whichever way you decide.

Regards,
Dwayne

Tod,

Not a very good pic, but here is what I did for a "walking" 6br:

I chose a 25" 1:10 twist barrel, and it is proving to have good accuracy potential.

What about a 6x45 Tod a Steely mentioned.

Way easy to form brass obviously, way efficient, and way cool.

Just started playing with mine and I like it, A LOT...

If you are going to go this far you might as well go all the way. Make a light weight 6mmPPC! I did out of one of the FW Winchester push-feed types and LOVE it! Accuracy is excellent and the 55-70 gr bullets kill varmint, deer , partridge and, of course, Cougars and Coyotes! It is just too much fun to shoot. Graff has cheap brass so you don`t have to worry about losing one but I always pick mine up. No sense of anyone knowing I was there. I am really considering getting a CZ action from JSC and making another one.
Aloha, Mark
