Bob,
Plus, much of the hunting I do is where I may see WT or elk, at long or short range, so the 7Mag IS a good choice for my style hunting.

As many have said, whitetails don't take much killin'. My favorites would probably be the 250 Savage, 257 Roberts, and 300 Savage. No flys on the 270, 7-08, 7x57,308 or any of a host of others. I just like to fit the cartridge to the game and the first three I named just seem to say deer hunting!

Lets see, I've shot them with the following:

243 Win

30-30

270 Win

7mm Rem

308 Win

300 Wsm

300 Roy

338 Win

They all killed dear dead no doubt about it, but none planted them like the:

270 Win
7 Mag
300 Wsm
300 Roy
338 Win mag

So I'm trying to say that I can not pick only three as so many work so very well.

But there is a 308 and 338 in the gun rack now.

And hopefully BobinNh will leave me a pre-64 model 70's in 270 win. in his will grin

The .257 Weatherby would also make the list if I could add a fourth.

Many other have already stated that it is not that hard to put a WT on the ground.

My list wil vary from time to time, depending on my flavor of the month.
