Do you have any real-world experience with the 338 RCM? It seems to me that it might very well be the most sensible of the short magnum craze but I am wondering if Ruger's advertised ballistics are a bit overly optimistic. I think I could like a compact thumper like it if it does close to what Ruger claims.

Larry,

I do not, though I have dies and 200 pieces of brass... grin.

After shooting my .338 Federal for a year, and taking a mule deer buck with it, I'm fairly confident I can get close to actual factory ballistics with the .338 RCM. When the .338 Fed came out, everyone including Federal spouted the "magic pixie dust" proprietary powder claim, but I found it fairly easy to match factory results in my PacNor tube.

I plan to acquire one over the winter, either via purchase or construction, and then we shall see. Basically I'm looking at it as a short-action .338-06 AI, focussing on the 210 gr TSX as the preliminary bullet of choice. If I can push 2800 fps with that bullet, I will have something useful indeed.

I agree that it could be right up there in utility among short fats.

I have the two right now that I'd narrow it to: a Rifles Inc. .284 that weighs all up with sling and full mag right at 6 lbs. I'd use the TTSX or MRX 140-gr bullet in that; the second would be a Shilen made .340 Wby that's 8.5 lbs all up which I did make with AK in mind. It shoots a bunch of premiums including the TSX well.

Oh yea, I'd hedge my bets and throw in a '95 GG in 45-70 that'd ride the bench in most cases but in a certain niche situation would be the go-to.

I suppose an "Alaskan Rifle" means it will kill a Brown Bear or Griz..In that case any rifle from a 30-06 up..I would use my 338 or 375 as a rule.

I paper- designed an "Ultimate Guide Rifle" on paper years ago when I was gunsmithing and presented it to a guide friend. Wish I'd kept a copy, now...

It included a parachute for goat hunts, a grenade launcher for repelling unwanted camp visitors in the middle of the night without getting out of the sleeping bag, a mule/horse/client "motivator" (bayonet) , and several other handy features. smile

Caliber was optional.....

After just seeing a .260 in action for 4 days for deer--I revise my opinion. I'll go with a 30.06 or heavier for almost any Alaskan big-game animal.

When it takes 2 or 3 shots to really down the animal, either it's bad shooting (not the case with my buddies) or...suffice it to say I want one shot to kill a blacktail very quickly, and the .06 continues to get it done.

I'd think a 270Win and 375H&H would be a good combo anywhere in North America.

I'm guessing the problem is bullet choice, not caliber. Two years ago my .260 took 3 animals in the space of 2.5 months- a caribou at 200 yards, a cow elk at 150 yards, a wolf at about 40 yards. (I did use the .338 on moose.) Bang-flops all, using 140 gr factory Corelokt in the .260 . The caribou and elk were both CNS hits, the wolf just forward of the left shoulder point, and out the base of the ribs on the opposite side.

I carried the .260 for moose this year with perfect confidence, but the moose failed to co-operate.... I normally carry a .338 or '06 for moose, of which I've killed about 20. Well, actually I carry it for the ubiquitous brown bear in the area, should I need it...moose die pretty easily, properly hit.

Don't knock the .260, used/loaded appropriately. It is certainly perfectly adequate for deer!

It hasn't even been a month. I've changed my mind. (And I just realized that I wouldn't really feel very handicapped for everything with just a single rifle, less the 22 cals - any of them from the .26 bores to the .45 bores would work. Some are a bit light in the bullet, others a bit weighty in the weapon. Middle ground is where I'd like to be with only a single one; it would be 30 caliber no doubt, either '06 or H&H.)

300WM - for wolf, caribou and mountain
45-70 - moose, bl. bear and grizz.
458WM for brownies

Just my EXPERT opinion from living in the comfort of the Kawartha Lakes, Central Canada. wink
