Looking at a '91 long action BLR in 30-06.
I know the older short actions were steel but are the early Long Actions, pre-Lightwieght, steel or Aluminum. They are listed in the blue book as 8+ lbs vs 7 3/4 for the post 95 lightweight?

The early long actions were steel, and very heavy. IMHO they are just too heavy, for what they are. However, I just love the short action steel framed BLRs. I have one in .308 that I have used for many years, and I have literally, lost count of how many deer I have taken with it.

But, as much as I like the BLR, I wouldn't want to pack the extra weight, for the slightly better balistics of the 30-06. If I just had to have the long action, then I would go with the newer lightweight version.

I think that's good advice, I'll hold off for a AL model if I have to add a LA to the stable.
