Is one better than the other, if so why? My brother is planning to purchase the Nikons in the next few days. I have had a pair of DCF WP's for several years that I am very happy with, but have not compared them directly to the Nikons. Thanks

They are virtually identical in all material respects.

You cannot upgrade from your Pentax with a Monarch. You would need to step up to another price class to accomplish that.

Thanks, I'm not looking to buy, but trying to advise my brother on his purchase. I think either can be had for similar money just wondered how they stacked up head to head.

The Monarchs depending on which model will have a bit more FOV and a bit less eye relief. If he wears glasses the Pentax might be the better choice. Otherwise, both are very good.

I never owned the DCF WP II's but have owned the older DCF WP 8x42. Not sure how comparable those two models are.

What I do know is the DCF WP 8x42 is a better bin optically than the Monarch 8x42, the Monarch is a good bin, my father-in-law and a close friend own them. I've had considerable time to compare the two (pentax vs Monarch). The Pentax have better resolution at all distances, period. Not by much, but they do. The DCF WP also slightly brighter.

I believe you can still occasionally find the older WP's NIB. If I'm not mistaken Doug also had some smokin' deals on DCF SP's.

If you can the SP's for close to the same price as Monarchs, absolutely no doubt get the Pentax.

I would think that the Pentax are the better view in that price range, though I've never had a problem with my Nikon ATB (in fact, I hunted with it this fall season again).
