I would be overjoyed to sell you one for half that money. In fact I would love to sell you one for 600.00.
Check the online auction sites and help your friend face reality.

I have one a lot like that one, it's based on the 722 the 721 is a long action. Now mine is not a collector gun it had been modified before me. But that is not is not a problem, I got it to build a gun on not look at. I paid $500.00 asking price was $600.00. If you want the collector piece than it may be worth if but not if you are going to use it, and my serial number is 3 digit. Thats 1955 I think. I'll second the check the auction sites, the CMP sold a bunch not that long ago but there are ones like mine that were position rifles so look. Good luck.

The 40X is the 40X is the 40X and is not based on any other action. The 40X was built for the express purposes of replacing the model 37 Remington. The only thing that the rifle you have posted pictures of is the sights bring the value up slightly.
I would not even think of paying more than 600.00 bucks (and that's high).

Sold one for $600 about 10 years ago. Wish I still had it!

One of the best 22 rifles made, but this one is priced a little on the high side. Where you buy it depends on how bad you want one . They aren't easy to find these days.
