IMR4831 was my favorite powder in my 270's for many years. Then I discovered Reloder-22 which out performed the IMR4831 but only marginally (Kinda splitting hairs in all honesty) but none-the-less groups were a tad tighter and velocity was highest.
I'm an unashamed advocate of Sierra bullets so try either of the two 140gr Sierra GameKings or the 150gr Sierra GameKing. wink

Have found this to be true in my M70 Win. 130s were game killers but the 150-160 grainers were much more acurate off the bench

Hot rod 150s are not all that far behind a 7 Rem. mag out of a 24 inch barrel.

I have found 150's to outshoot 130's in most .270 rifles--sometimes not by much, admittedly. And between my wife and I we must have owned a dozen .270's over the years.

I should also add to my earlier post that I've also found that it really doesn't matter much to game in the field whether you're shooting a 130, 140 or 150. All will work on any size of game the .270 is capable of, and that's a lot. The design of the bullet is far more important than what it weighs, and the trajectory is close between them that there's no practical difference in the field.

Me two JB, and that's the main reason why I've used the 150's and the 160 as much or maybe more than the 130's and 140's.

For the most part they've not been a ton load more accurate but since I am kind of a accuracy nut case I use what shoots really well (within reason).

I am usually not a 'one load to a rifle' guy, but my little M70 FWT 270 shoots the 130gr Partition so well(60grs H4831SC) that I am going to stock up on that bullet and shoot it exclusively.
Sure makes reloading easier, too.

And the nice thing about the Nozler is that they don't modify it's design every 6 months (like company X does)so you don't have to lay up a large supply....grin

Amen to that, did you happen to notice how the bullet price went up as the gas price went up, but...when the gas prices plummeted what happened???

Yeah, I noticed.

However, I have heard that bullet/brass/ammo. prices should go down sometime here if copper/zinc/lead prices continue to fall?

I agree with those who have suggested 150gr bullets. They have generally offered better accuracy the the 130's for me and my rifles. And usually with H4831, about 56grs. or so. If I had a finicky rifle I'd give the 150gr. Nos.BT's a try.

In my 700 I've found that the 130 Nosler BT with IMR 4350 powder with a CCI 200 primer seated about 1/16" off the lands, I don't have the powder charge handy but I believe it is around 55 gr.. It produces 1/2 MOA in my gun and works great on deer.

A couple of questions are begging to be asked. Have you played with the seating depth? How far off the lands are you with your loads?

Couple of things that I have picked up on Model 700s. I had messed with perhaps hald a dozen Model 700s of that era, and one common shortcoming was that the locking lugs needed to be lapped. Sometimes, only one lug was contacting, and not much at that.
Secondly, I have shot or seen shot with my 270 several dozen big game animals with the Ballistic Tip in the 270. Rough count, perhaps 60 or so deer, a couple dozen antelope, a dozen elk, a bear, two sheep. Sheep are thick through the chest, and the 150 Ballistic Tip exited on both chest shots. I believe the new 150 Grain Ballistic Tip acts similar to a Partition. I used to use the 140 grain Ballistic Tip and now use the 150, because I am less and less of a velocity fan any more.
Another bullet that I have used with good results on deer and one cow elk at a little over 400 yards in the Hornady Interlock.
But first, I'd check those locking lugs to make sure there is some decent contact.
Then, if you know a gunsmith that has a magnifying borescope, have him check the bore. I wasted a ton of money on a model 700, only to look down the bore with a borescope and find two of the lands and grooves looked like Aunt Edna's face after a case of Black Label and a carton of Chesterfield cigarettes.

Howdy

My .270 didn't shoot 140's as well as 130's in my testing. I suppose I could go back to the drawing board and try again, but I bought so much 130 and 150 grain ammo and bullets that there isn't much point in agonizing over getting that "perfect" compromise 140 grain bullet to shoot.AW

Well, looks like I've got some good loads to start off with. Ifwe ever get out of this deep freeze we're in right now, I might be able to actually get out to the range! It's been -35 at night and about -25C daytime highs for the last week or more, so no range time for me. My buddy gave me a half box of 130gr BT to try, and I have some 140gr Hornady Interlocks that I've used before but never with the powders recommended here. I'll get some 150's as well and get started. Thanks for all the suggestions thus far.

I would make one thing constant in your trials or you will be all over the place. Different things matter to different people so I would choose what matters the most to you, either a certain powder or certain bullet wt. & type.

160 Partition and enough 4350 to bughole at 100 yards.
