My two partners and I expect to draw a muzzleloader elk tag for Colorado unit 76 this year...

Does anyone have any info regarding this unit that you would be willing to share..??

We would prefer to camp and hunt on our own but we have not ruled out a drop camp if it was reasonable....We don't have horses..

I hunted there 4 years ago during the first rifle season. Hunted a place called 'finger mesa'. Passed up two small bulls because an old timer had seen a big 6x6 up there. Saw some cows and heard a few bulls bugling but didn't see them. I think it was more suited to long range rifle hunting though. If you check in at the DOW office in Creede when you get there, the officer will go over several good places to hunt with you. Good luck. It's a huge unit with a lot of elk. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

This unit is out my back door, however I have never hunted it for elk. I do have worked and played in the area and do have several friends who have hunted it. PM me with specific questions and I will try to find answers.

Pigmy, I am not sure where or how large unit 76 is now but I began hunting all around the Creede area up to Lake City back in the 60s until the bad winter die off years ago. I then moved up to the Gunnison area. They put so many restrictions on hunting around Creed I never went back although I love the country especially around Spring Creek Pass. They have introduced moose into the area and Centurion,(Frank on this board), can probably answer some of your questions. He drew and killed a moose there just South of the pass two or three years ago. He is a smith in Montrose. I could tell you about most of the country but as for game, been gone too long. There are several dude ranches and guides where you can have your game packed out for a price. I would talk to them first before hunting. Rifle hunting season they are very busy. -- no

Thanks, Need one... I'd be very interested in talking to someone about getting game packed out.... We're all in pretty good shape, but we're not spring chickens anymore, and a man must know his limitations...
