Are those axis as tasty as everyone says? I'd love to have one. For some reason I think a tanned axis hide would be cool. Spike spoke my language too. He did more with less than anybody.

I think axis is as good as beef. I'd pass on a 140 whitetail to shoot a mature axis buck no matter what the horns look like. The hides are very cool. I'm thinking about covering my dining room chairs with hair on axis hide...

Hey, get me one like that, and then bring me some doe hides or buck hides, I'll have em tanned and swap you tanned hides for the cape?

I may have to steal that idea from you and tell the wife I came up with it. Considering it's a good tanning job, will the hair stay on hide/chairs like that for a while?

Yes, the hair will remain on for a good amount of time. Assuming the hide is treated correctly BEFORE it gets to the tannery and then tanned correctly.

The axis meat has yet to be beaten excepting moose, in my books. I tried to tell Bart not to eat it, the axis that is, that it wasn't good for him, to give it all to me. Somehow the cat got out of the bag though.... I don't think he has spoken to me much since.... I"ve been wanting to go shoot 1 axis doe every late winter just for the steaks but every spring I get tied up in other stuff and forget to go looking for a place that I can afford.

Congratulations to all that posted here.

Those are all great deer and you should be very proud of yourselves.

I enjoyed this thread immensely...........

Isn't this what a Hunter's Campfire conversation should be about?

Good luck to all in 2009.

Here's few from over the years...

My first big one
[Linked Image]

2nd nice one. Both of these are Blacktail/Muledeer cross bucks
[Linked Image]

The little one was shot about 75 yards from the other the following year
[Linked Image]

Shot this deer in his bed..., another hybrid
[Linked Image]

Waited and waited for a big one, but he never showed. So I shot this one the last day of the season.
[Linked Image]

The ugliest deer I've ever shot!
[Linked Image]

And a couple from this year... Shot this one first

And 1 week later, this one,

We was. The day I shot him he had 18.5" and 17.5" horns and he scored 91. Three months later they had shrunk an inch or so each and his score was about 87 I think. Today the horns are down to 15 and he tapes out about 81. I hope he's about done shrinking.
