Finished out the late season with Dad tonight. He has filled 2 tags this year. At 84 he is up B4 6am every morning on his active farm. Despite being in great shape he now hunts from his homemade "Hilton" Box. The days of stump sitting are gone. We saw nothing - but this hunt will not be forgotten. He has hunted this same spot for many years and he said " See that big maple over there, that where my ashes are to be spread. My wife also wants hers there. I'll be there and every day the deer can come to see me." After a little silence I said " sounds good to me" lwr308

That must have been a bit of a shock. But, he was just telling you what he wants. Take care.

Sounds like a good tree to have a family picnic under.

Don't know the whole situation there, but sounds like Dad respects you and is comfortable enough around you to share with you his wishes and realizations of mortality.

Thanks for your comments- Bench and family picnic are keepers. Sounds like we will be talking about the future of the land the maple tree is on. lwr308

That is great, that kind of trust is what a mature parent/child relationship should be all about. The bench and picnics would be the greatest of living memorials.

That was a special moment, no doubt. It shows that your Dad respects you enough to bring up the subject.
My folks passed over a few years back and we had talks about death and dying. Just because I didn't want to think of life without them didn't mean they weren't thinking about it.
I believe that our conversations let them know they weren't alone and made my acceptance of their deaths quite a bit easier.
Take every chance to let him know how much you love him and are proud to be his kid. In the end most folks wonder if they did right by their kids more than anything else.

Be glad he told you. When the time comes and I hope it is still a long way off, you will have no doubts what is the right ting to do. Glad my folks did the same.

I just so happen to think that is super cool! Must really be something to be able to love and trust family like that. You are blessed!

Thanks all- he is an amazing old guy. 84 and looks 60's. Is driven to live work and play. He became a great old guy after being a very difficult under 50 guy. I think he would agree that his best years were 60-80's +. We are finally getting a great relationship. Best thing was neither one gave up in the early years. Thanks again for giving me the fireside. - lwr308-
