Just brought a marlin .444S, going to be used for pigs, goats and anything else here in Aust. It's the first one that I have found and is in good condition. I was after a .44mag winchester but found this and was impressed with the rifle and already own a 39A.

Any tips etc would be helpful.

A mate reckons that I can fire .44 mags through it, I don't & won't agree?

Any major problems with this model? The action is tight, barrel good with the micro rifleing, and woodwork in VGC.

What sort of price in USA? It cost me $550 Aust. But it's the first one that I have seen for sale here.

Will mainly be used in scrub work up to 100m are "ghost ring sights' worth the effort?

Sorry about the number of questions but you "are" the blokes to ask!

Thanks

You are right that it is not advisable to shoot 44 Mags in a 444 Marlin. You will enjoy your 444S. They can be found for around $300 in the US. If you like a peep sight you might try the ghost ring sights. They are great for snap shooting within the range you specify.

I have had my .444 for several years. I load mine with 265 gr Hornady JFP and IMR 4198 with good results. They have excellent knockdown on Texas Hogs we have hunted and deer. Your rifle should be drilled and tapped on the side of the reciever for a redfield type receiver sight which would give you more adjustment for sighting in. I have also used to XO brand ghost ring sight with good results. While I have heard that you can fire .44 Mag in the .444 rifle as a single shot, I would not want to chance damaging the chamber. Though when I reload cast bullet for it I use the same 240 gr swc in it that I shoot in my .44 mags and the micro groove rifling will shoot the correct cast bullet very well in most cases. Good luck, you should really like the rifle. Ryan
