Here in Mi we can legaly hunt coyotes at night under a light, catch is as I read the guides its only with a rimfire. This is nuts right? Or am I missing something?
Seems to me a guy would be the mother of all cripplers shooting coyotes with any kind of a rimfire.

Oh, you will get a few, but like you said, runners will be common.

I have been shooting a 22mag for yrs and yrs with great success. I use the cci 30gr. I have complete penetration out to 75yds. Those who say you can't or you will have runners haven't shot many with them. If you have patience and put the bullet where it needs to be you will have DRT. HAPPY HUNTING

I've killed two with a 17hmr, rib shots. One needed another shot to finish. I used the 20g bullets, not sure if it made any difference.

A semi-auto 22mag w/a quality 3x9-50 scope would make a good coyote gun. Same rules in georgia -rimfire or shotgun -each on a stand will work great.

it just has to be a rimfire or a shotgun. I use a 10 ga with BB copper plated lead with full chokes and its pretty devastating. If you can see them at night they are in range. Buddies use 22 lr, 17 hmr and 22 mag all with success on yotes and fox. Put it where it counts and they go nighty night.

I would not purposely set out to hunt dogs with a rimfire but I am not above taking an opportunity shot if presented. A 12 or 10 guage and proper loads would be a top pick for me if I used a shotgun primarily. Below is a pic of a lucky opportunity shot from a number of years ago. This dog tried to sneak down a drainage ditch after crossing a road. He took a single rem subsonic round in the back of his head at maybe 25 or 30ish yards, I do not really recall other than it was very close. Score one for the suppressed Ruger.

Passport: In my life I have killed maybe 10 or 12 Coyotes with various 22 L.R. Rifles. Indeed I have also wounded a bunch of Coyotes with this caliber as well! In front of a witness I once killed a Coyote at 125 yards with one shot from a Winchester Model 62 (caliber 22 L.R.). That unlucky Coyote was hit in the spine as it walked up a steep slope on the opposing side of a ravine from me - that Coyote never twitched again after it was hit. Still I would NOT set out to Hunt Coyotes and have along a 22 L.R. Rifle as my only arm. "If", the shotgun is legal in your area then use it within its parameters for your night Hunting. Best of luck. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

A member here shot two coyotes with a 308, and lost both. What makes anyone think a 22 L.R. or 17 HMR wouldbe enough gun.Oh it will work if you wait for the perfect shot, most hunters don't and most get the shakes when they see the big coyote on its way in and blow a easey shot. Just get a good centerfire and practice and leave the shooting with 22 L.R. and 17 HMRs to the dumb azz's
