Dont know the serial number but it's posted for sale and I came across it this afternoon. Started at 599.00 with no bids yet. I'd post the link but I gather thats kind of frowned upon.
I like it here. They let me swear.

Don't worry about it, it's not a pre-mil E.

Blair, that just confuses things tremendously. Who else has early rifles?

Murray's states that the Chicopee address was used up until serial number 1,094,000 so this is in that range.

My bad.. I knew there were leftover barrels used at Westfield. My comment was actually geared at the LBC, for some reason I was thinking L was 1959. But since it's 1960 it all makes sense..
“ The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. All models and variations of 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s covered. Also dates, checkering, engraving.. Find at www.savagelevers.com

Based on data I have collected:
I still think the cut off for 1959 production was close to 968000.
The new tang safety F and DL were started in 1960. I think the 1 millionth rifle was presented to the NRA(?). The next lowest I have is 1,000,5xx.
The 1960 catalog shows the "new" F & DL with tang safety and the E and R with the old lever safety. As with the transition from the 7xx,xxx receivers to the 9xx,xxx receivers, Savage was again producing the old (9xx,xxx)and new (1,xxx,xxx) styles at the same time. The E & R being the old receivers serialed under 1,000,000.
I have 2 serials listed in the 97x,xxx and 1 in the 98x,xxx but I don't trust that info at this time...need more data from that range. It is interesting that one of the 97x,xxx's is an R and is the only 1960 production R I have data on. Again, I don't trust the info so don't know if there were R's produced after 1959.
The 1960 E is a very interesting rifle. It is cataloged as having an EG style forearm but I only know of one like that and it has a 1959 LBC (proto for catalog?). All the other 1960 E's I have data on have the F style forearm and 1960 LBC. Very limited production with very different features from anything else produced.
The Chicopee marked barrels run till after 1,04x,xxx and I know that the Westfield's started by 1,035,xxx. There appears to be a big overlap. I didn't not do a good job of collecting info on this subject so my data is slim.
Another item I haven't done a good job collecting data on is square thread/V-thread change. I don't know if all the post-1960 Chicopee barrels were square thread.
Savage...never say "never". Rick...

Rick, I've got a 1,000,3XX with an L date code in my notes. I kept crappy data back then though so I don't know who or what model it was.

HUH... Mike...
All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<

Welcome Rust. I'll take the blame for starting the post without specifying I was searching for information on the model 99. in the 99's. serial number 1 million is a line in the sand sort of like pre '64 Winchesters. Quality and features of those 99's produced prior to 1 million are more appealing to alot of folks including myself. Now I do have some post "million" 99's with the tang safety and such but I prefer the fit and finish of the earlier rifles. Please share your thoughts and interests with us.
