I'm considering a re-barrel and an action job on a Ruger 77 MKII from 30/06 to .280 Ackley Improved. I've noticed some comments from some on this site that they had feeding problems with their AI rifles. Before I jump into this I'd like to hear what those of you who have, or had 280 AI rifles, experienced with them.

I don't NEED a 280AI for any particular reason. I just WANT one. However I don't want to deal with the hassle of feeding problems. It takes all the fun out of shooting it or hunting with it. I'll go another route instead. Ron

Feed issues mostly occur from the sharp shoulder catching on the chamer mouth as it feeds into the chamber. The long, tapering shoulder of the 300 H&H Magnum makes for a buttery smooth feed.

A good gunsmith should be able to address the feed issue by working on the magazine lips.

I have used the 280 Ack for years and have never had a feeding problem. Mine is a Rem Left Hand 700

I had a feeding problem on my 280AI. It was a rebarrel of a Sako Model 75 270 win with the 3 lug bolt. When retracting the case after firing, the bottom lug rotates down and it was hitting the sharper and higher shoulder of the 280AI load that was on top in the magazine if that load was on the left side of the staggered mag.

The gunsmith beveled the back edge of that lug and it works fine now. My chamber is also so tight that the fireformed case does not get resize at the pressure ring by the Redding Body Die and that makes for a slightly stiff bolt closure.

No problems here. I've owned several .280 Ackleys over the years; the gunsmiths have always known what they were doing in getting cases to feed well. Actually, two of my Remington 700s are running with standard feed ramps and they work perfectly.

A fella would have to look really hard to find a non-Ackley in our home. They kill fine, load fine, feed fine and cut the trimming chores to zero. What's not to like?

My .280AI (700 Remington) is stock factory on the feed ramps, followers, etc. and works just fine.

"Wanting one"....thats the best reason of all...go ahead and get you one, you won't regret it. I have had my Jarrett in the AI configuration for 25 or so years. No feeding problems at all.

Mine is a M700 with standard everything. It feeds the improved case as well as the standard, which is to say very well.

It seems the push feed, long actioned Ackleys usually feed very well. It's when you go to controlled feed or short actions that it can be a bit more difficult.

Thanks, all! I appreciate the info. I'm going to go with the 280 AI. MuleDeer convinced me. If he doesn't have any feeding problems in a Ruger 1A I know I have nothing to worry about! LOL

I am leaning toward action and barrel work by Shaw and an Accurate Innovations walnut stock. Economical(relatively), reliable and accurate(hopefully), something I will enjoy looking at and shooting but not a safe queen. Real rifles must draw blood, as someone else said on this forum.

BTW, has anyone used the Spec-Tech trigger for the Ruger MKII? I'm debating that or a Timney. I have a Timney on my 700 and it's sweet but I always seem to end up trying new stuff.

Thanks again!

Don't overlook Pacnor barrels. I'd rather spend more on a better barrel and keep the factor stock until finances allowed the upgrade.

I did the same with a 270 MK II and no modification was needed to get proper feeding. I just polished the rails and ramp. I think a lot of the feeding issues are perpetuated by the Ackley bashers, don't know what got them PO'd.

I used a Moyers trigger first. It was excellent but I didn't like how much the stock needed to be carved out to fit it. I switched to a Timney and it is not as smooth but is simple and fits more easily. These were the only LH choices when I put this rifle together.

You'll like the 280 Imp.

just got my 280AI back about 2 weeks ago I had PacNor re-barrel my 09 mauser Chris said his 280AI had some feeding problems but with a little polishing it feeds fine I am breaking in the barrel now slow slow process. Mausers are controlled round feed and mine feeds great. So far it looks like a tack driver.
