Any speculation as to when/if the factories will produce any rifles in 25WSM?

How about the 338WSM? Or, for that matter a 338 SAUM? That's the one I'd like to get a hold of!!! It'd be sinister with a 185 triple shock (grin).

So, do you think that because they went with the WSSM that there is little hope that a WSM in 257 will be made?

Why did they choose the WSSM platform over the WSM?

Well, I guess I must be one of the morons that Olin was thinking of. But to me, a short handy rifle, like a Featherweight, which matches the ballistics of a factory 25/06 (or 257AI) sounds pretty intriguing. I don't need the ballistics of a 257 Weatherby. Now, whether there are more people like me, or more who would want more velocity...only time will tell. But if you already know the answer, you should be very wealthy by now.

I'll got out on a limb, with my Psychic Powers.

The full meal deal 257WSM would outsell the WSSM version of same,20 to 1 on a poor day.....................

Is it just me? It seems like the .257WSSM is the answer to a question that's never been asked.

Based on ballistics, it offers nothing new, and if someone really wants a short action, there's the Ruger #1 as well as other rifles. How much shorter is short anyway??

the 257wssm will not perform on the level of the 25-06, it is just not possible. barsness already covered this. we already have the 257 roberts (yes, it doe fit a short action fine, mine is a win 70). the 25-308 would have made more sense than the wssm. I could see the merit of the 257wsm as it would bridge the gap between the 25-06 and 257 weatherby. I had and sold a 257 weatherby as I coucluded that there was no reason the carry a long action/barreled mag in 257 when a 270 win would do the same thing. when usrac makes a 257 wsm with a 24" barrel, I will buy one.

The WSMs have been so popular, that I thought it was strange that they didn't try to ride that train when they decided to develope a new 25 caliber round. I wonder if they will swallow their pride and bring out a 257 WSM if the WSSM doesn't catch on.

257Bob: I ain't trying ot pick a fight. And as a "Bob" fan, I'd never argue with someone with your name!

But I don't believe I said that the 25WSSM would "perform on the level of a 25/06". I said IF it matches the ballistics of a FACTORY 25/06. Which is what it is advertized to do. I read JB's treatise also, and I don't disagree. I got my 1st 25/06 in 1965. And it clearly will perform much better than 2990 fps with a 120 gr bullet (factory ballistcs).

Now, I don't know the exact capacity of the 25WSM case, but it looks like it ought to be close to a 257Bob or 257AI. If so, it ought to be able to reach, or get very close to, FACTORY 25/06 ballistics. At least my 257AI will easily do over 3000 with 120gr bullets. And several 257 have gotten very close to 3000 fps, which our friend JB will agree with.

FWIW:

As for a Speedy Short action 25, I hope that Remmy does what it does best and make the wildcat 25-284 a factory round. It worked for the 25-06, 22-250, 7mm-08, and a few others. Remmy seems to have its best success copying ideas, rather than coming up with its own.

BMT I suppose they better do a 25SAUM rather than factorizing the 25-284. The WSM line seems to be alot more popular than the SAUM line and if remington will keep life in the SAUM line a 25SAUM could be the ticket.

True, true. . . . .

But why mess with perfection? The 25-284 really is the best 25 for the least weight, length, and muzzle blast. I understand that it yeilds great velocity from a 22 inch tube.

I would not object to the 25 WSM or 25 SAUM. Although, I would really like to see what could be done with a 6.5mm WSM . . . .

Just my 2 cents,

BMT

I am not trying to pick a fight either, I am just bent that usrac/browning did not go with the 25wsm. I see the merit of a 25wssm but not enough to fork over any $ for one as I have those bases covered. Also, I agree the 25-284 is super and may be the best combo (case capacity/bore) for the 25 yet. still, I am holding out for a 25-308 from the factory. only time will tell but I do not need more rifles, just time to shoot them.

I've got a 257 AI and a 257 WBY. I load for a 25 06 belonging to a friend. Another friend had a 25/300WSM built on a Ruger No. one with 30 in. bbl [ figure that out! ] and liked it so I found him a 700 with a 250AI custom bbl and had it rechambered to 25/300. I volunteered to fool with it.
He had his Ruger shooting the LRB's real good so I didn't try any of them. I tried all the Barnes and some Hornady and Noslers I had laying around.
Bottom line was that with some powders I couldn't get to 25 06 velocities without pressure signs.Equaling the 25 06 was about top end which ain't slouchy but since the rifle was a long action I couldn't see where we accomplished anything except helping out Barnes bottom line.Well, I do have a much larger asstmt of powder now!
We got a bad chambering job on the rifle which cut the development short But I got a good enough look so that I'm satisfied with the 257 AI in short action and the 257 WBY in long version.[ does that make the 25 06 a misfit!]
Probably a good time to make my escape!
