Mine newly acquired Pre 64 is a pre-war model, with the backwards safety and cloverleaf tang. However, the serial number makes it a 1942 model.

What year are considered "pre-war?"

Blaine: I'm looking at Rule's book, page 50,and a Table that indicates that Winchester stopped recording production at Serial # 52,548, Nov 20,1942; and production resumed Jan 24,1946.

From that, I guess it's safe to assume that pre war's were anything below that serial number....I'll keep looking, but that must be pretty close.

BTW the question is not dumb smile

Hold on! Another table is for the "rifles"; the one I looked at was for "Receivers"; so maybe the dates on the receivers are not he same as for the completed "rifles"......mmmmmmmmmmm....further research is in order.....I'll report back....Help!

Blaine: OK, Rule's Book, page 125. He dscribes the "pre war" as 1936-1947 ,Type 1 Receiver,Clover leaf tang, and up to serial number "60,500 app." Close as I can get.....

It is just what they call them, however not all of them were made pre 1942.... refers more to the action type.... Type 1 is a pre war (clover leaf tang), Type II is a transition gun(clover leaf tan but differnt safety) and a Type III is the later models with the rounded action and three position safety like todays guns.... The Type 1 & tpye II overlapped in 46-48 or so.... Keep in mind Winchester did some "interesting stuff" in those days... just used parts when they had them and so on

Interesting information gentlemen. I've picked up bits and pieces here and there, but I need to get a copy of Rule's book. If I could find one for less than the cost of an organ transplant, I'd have one. Grin.

I think I found an error in Rule's book.. Minor, but it's there.. Could be that the printers did it, who knows...

Page 165, top right; pix of a receiver sight labeled "57W" But on page 201 the picture of a catalog page w/receiver sights have what looks like the same sight (on the left) is labeled "48 WJS" while the other and different design on the right is labeled "57W"..

Redneck,
I have not seen the book on the Receiver sights but the two Receivers sights you mention look very much alike..As I recall the main difference is the Redfield has a window affair that srews onto the face plate.
