Success in the middle east is his hope of a positive view in history.
Given the Democrats abandoned politics stopping at the waters edge, I fear the worst. Letting the middle east burn to win a political debate seems possible to likely.
I'll say this, as a Commander in Chief, he was stellar.

A Great person and a true leader. He MADE the tough calls and did not blame anyone else. Agree or disagree he has a real set of them (you know what I mean) and he is a real decent human being to boot.
This country was fortunate to have him, despite what some want to shout otherwise.

His policies have been the only advancement in the middle east since the first diplomat set foot there, and accomplished nothing.
If the infant democracies survive and flourish, history will be kind to him. Given the current state of politics in the US, continued success is not guaranteed.
