I had a .308 99 rebored to .358W a few years ago ... now thinking about a 99 in 260 Rem., and have a few questions. I think it would be cheaper to start with a 243 and have it rebored, but it may be tougher to find a .243 donor than to find a .308. Also I'm thinking it would be best to stay with a 99c to avoid feeding issues. Wondering if using those long 6.5 bullets, especially like the Barnes TSX is going to make the cartridge a bit long for the magazine? Furniture wise, I once had ( but have since lost) a contact for someone who said he would build a composite for a 99...any suggestions? Any other issues I may run up against? P.S. "stupid idea" doesn't count.

Put this in the Savage collectors forum. You'll get much better/faster response. I do recall a guy there having had his M99 either rebarreled or rebored to .260 rem. Sounded like he had pretty good success with the results.

I have a .308 that I'm going custom on. probably a 6.5, but I think I'll be going Creedmore or Lapua rather than a .260

260Remguy has done the 260 conversion on 99's several times, you might try PM'ing him. If you can't get hold of him, let me know and I'll track him down.

The 99C would definitely be the easiest way to go.

MPI is the only composite stock for 99's that I know of. Here's a thread with pics of one plus a beautiful elk.

I have a 99F in 260 that is a 243 rebore. It works great and the 260 ammo feeds fine through both 243 and 308 rotors, so you don't need to build on a 99C or 99CD if you don't want to. If you were going to build a 284 based wildcat, I'd say that the 99C or 99CD is by far the best choice, unless you have a rotory magazine 99 that came as a 284 and the barrel is bad. If you stick to SAAMI specs for COAL, the 260 should work in any Savage 99 rotory magazine. Mine feeds my favorite 129 grain Hornady handload and the Remington 120, 125, and 140 grain factory loads flawlessly.
