I figger it's time to buy a .223 gopher gun. I like the feel of the 20" Rem SPS tactical and Howa Compact Varminter. Both have the Hogue stocks, which I don't mind at all. Both are 20" barrels..

Flip a coin?

You`ll spend more for the Remy. Between the two, aside from personal preference in looks between the two, I see no real advantages mechanically, in dependability or in durability in going with the Remy.....Howas are very good rifles and very accurate out of the box.

DO figure on buying a Timney trigger for the Howa, if that turns out to be your choice, add that to the cost. I like the Howa actions better than Remingtons, but Remington's triggers usually beat Howas all hollow. A Timney fixes that, though.

I have the 1500 and it shoots great but it will get a new trigger.
Mine has the hogue stock and 20" tube also, it handles great. Good Luck to you

I like my Vanguard alot, but do keep in mind you have to add a hundred dollar trigger to them.

Congrats to you. No telling how many hours I fooled with mine and never got the creep out and safety still work.

I have 1500 in 06, I was able to adjust the factory trigger a bit but it's tricky to keep the safety functional. I think Buds had some Hogue/Howa for around ~$420 shipped, I'm thinking of picking up another in .243 at that price wink.

A local sale on these SPS Tacticals is tugging at me, especially w/ the current $40 rebate. Have heard these are 1:9 twist, w/ the new X-mark triggers. Can anyone confirm this?

The actions are nicer on the Howa's and the newer ones have triggers that can be adjusted much better than the old ones. There are ways to fix any of them, it just takes a little work.

Does any one have any of the older Howa, or Vanguard triggers they want to discard?

If so, I would like try to rework it..

Thanks..

The Howa/Vanguard platforms are good solid actions in my opinion...

That is correct.

It's a fun little rifle.. Topped mine with a 10x40 Elite 3200 with knobs and the gophers just hate it.

Is the factory stock on these decent? Or did you replace yours?
