My son has saved his money and Dad's gonna match. He is twelve and wants his first inline. He will need about a 2" reduction in stock length I figure, 22" barrel. Any suggestions out there? I see that Knight has a combo pack but he just needs the gun, I hate paying for things I already have.
Thanks

You probably can't beat the Knight for twice the money. It is a good safe muzzleloader.

best thing I can tell ya,

take the boy out to gunshops, big box stores, let him look at them. if the place allows, let him shoulder.

the knight youth wolverine may fit the bill better than an wolf. both are good guns. the wolverine should run about $50 to $100 more than the wolf.

also may thing of an 45cal. pistol bullets from 40cal to 44cal. with the proper sabot, you can get the same knock down as an 50cal with less recoil. also 45cal powerbelts around 70 to 75grs of loose powder.

other thoughts, 12yr old boy saving up. the cva wolf would fit the budget. or watch for sales at gander mtn., sportsman warehouse, bass pro shop, cabela's, maybe even http://www.sportsmansguide.com/ www.sportsmansguilde.com.

Hey, swampman, why'nt you go grind that axe somewhere else.

You've been here only a short while, but already your biased BS is getting old. I've never owned a CVA, but that's just because I've been too busy owning other firearms.

And where do you come off asking people how long they've been shooting? A guy kills four deer, cleanly, with powerbelts, and all you can think to ask is how long he's been shooting?

Why'nt you ask how dead those deer were, and whether a different bullet would've killed 'em any deader?

Putz.

That is an excellent price. The Green Mountain barrel alone is worth that.

My son is 12 as well and considered 2 important "points" in buying his first ML. First the rifle has to have a hammer for safety reasons. 12 year olds get figity waiting for a deer to come by and the fact that I could visually see the hammer was important to me.

Stock length is an issue but 12 year olds grow quickly and in 2 years time they can handle the normal stock length. Having a stock you can modify is a consideration.

Recoil is a matter of finding a proper load using a light weight ML bullet and a some what reduced charge below 100 grains so your Son's "Range time" is an enjoyable but more importantly builds confidence.

His first ML likey will be a "Transitional" rifle which he will want to up-grade later or a rifle he can grow build upon that has barrel, stock options etc.

So surprise here that I am a T/C fan, but my sons first ML was a T/C pro hunter for the above reasons. He has extra stocks and barrels so what ever hunting situation developed he is using the same rifle he is familar shooting.

Cost is oviously a factor for any young hunters purchase but I have alway believed is starting out with what you likely will end up with.

There is always the "used" market for any selection you might make to reduce your costs.

You should play the lottery. We have a lot of lighting strikes in Florida, but I've never been hit by lighting.

My experience is with Knights and Whites only. Knight makes a great gun for little dough (especially the Wolverine), if you could find a White Whitetail used and in good shape that might be another way to go. Anyhoo...enjoy your time in the field with your son.

Thanks for the good information. The hammer thought is a good one it is one of the reasons I like my BLR. I have a 1989 Walnut stock Knight MK 85 in perfect condition that I recently purchased(another story altogether). I was leaning toward the wolverine because of the similarity, I have three younger boys as well that may end up buying and using the 12 year olds gun when he grows out of it, or he may opt to keep it.Knight told me they would trade the shortened stock for a full length one at no charge. I will look at the others as well, CVA Traditions and Rossi are on the short list.
At the risk of opening a can of worms here, is the Knight of today as good as when my beautiful MK85 was made?

Yes, it's just as good or better. The MK-85 is still a very awesome gun. I can't bring myself to sell mine, even though I have more expensive guns.

I just went to underclocked suggested web site and that is a terrific price. The factory quoted me $289.00 msrp on the Wolverine junior combo pack and I thought that was a crazy price. 150-170 is back in the real world.
Thanks for the good lead on the Wolverine. That puts it in the same price range as the CVA/Rossi offerings.

I love my Thompson Center Firehawk!! Best/favorite frontstuffer I've owned yet. 50cal, ss/walnut,NO BREECH PLUG!! No aluminum ramrod!!

Shooting dream, realiable!! 55inches of rain a year, 777 with a number 11 percussion cap. Close to 750 rounds and never even a hangfire. Squeeze the trigger and this puppy barks just like a centerfire.

I'd change nothing about it! Perfect!!

That's a really nice gun. I actually prefer the #11 ignition because I can get the caps so cheap. I bought 8 boxes for $2.00 at Walmart. That's 100 shots for 25 cents. My 700ML and my MK-85 both use them.

This is on the expensive side, but it shoots smokeless powder and the accuracy and recoil I am told are both gr8. Savage.

Shag, that is nice!!!! I've got the same rifle with a plastic stock, it's light and accurate, but I like walnut & stainless much better.

Thanks,

I really love it! I'm gonna get one for my son.

Another front stuffer I really like is the Stainless/Walnut Lyman Deer Stalker!!! Very sharp looking rifle. It's a side lock. But it's sweet!!

Believe it or not that pic was taken at noon! Wet foggy dark rainy day!! Love it though! The camera flash is the only thing to add brightness to that pic! love the deep dark timber late in the season. smile
