WASHINGTON Sen. John McCain is imploring his Republican colleagues to drop partisan demands and let the popular president get to work.

The Arizona Republican made his first comments on the Senate floor since his rival, President Barack Obama, was sworn into office.

He said the nation has come together in a way that it has not for some time. McCain was speaking in defense of Hillary Rodham Clinton's appointment as the next secretary of State. Senate leaders had planned to confirm her by unanimous consent on Tuesday, but Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn objected because of concerns raised about foreign contributions to her husband's charity.

A roll call vote was planned for late Wednesday.

You can't "lose" what you never even fought for. crazy

McCain's "campaign" was the weakest, limpest excuse for a fight that I can remember in a long time.

Seemed like he was just tired and along for the ride, wherever it took him. He had no fire or drive.

He was content to just let fate take over, cause he certainly did very little to advance himself.

I find myself agreeing with McCain on this. We lost the election. Rather than nitpicking every stupid point for the next 4-8 years, and sounding like a bunch of cry babies (or Rush Limbaugh), the Republicans need to pick their battles wisely if they ever hope to regain their majorities. If Senators want to oppose the nomination, they can vote against confirmation, but delaying to make some political points looks very petty. Obama wants some rope, and they should give him some. Besides, Hillary is the best choice of anyone Obama could pick for SOS.

I don't think there's any question he deserves our respect for his bravery and service to our country as a naval officer but for a long time he's been just another politician and they all eat out of the same trough.

He lost because he was a liberal that the RNC picked. You cant get the party vote when your not running one of the party.

its becoming a waste of time to talk about politics here. So many are willing to jump on board with the magic negro and his socialist policies.
If you, Cheyenne, find yourself agreeing with McCain, then you too are part of the problem.

I don't believe the Republicans had anyone that could have done any better than McCain. There were some conservatives in the primaries but they got very little support. Palin cost more votes than she got. I think Kay Bailey Hutchinson would have been a better choice.

Who do you think we might put up in 2012 that can do any good? I'm afraid I don't see much light at the end of the tunnel. The party is pretty fractured right now.

Yep. He was the Democrats favorite Republican. That's why he lost. All his supporters voted for Obama.

Bad candidate who ran a bad campaign, designed to run against Hillary and he never adjusted.

I appreciate holding some of these nominees' feet to the fire. I wish they were doing a better job, in fact.

Picking your battles is a fine idea, but you don't have to be invisible in the meantime.

If nobody resists the Obama rampage, how will a viable opponent develop for 2012. Just being a whiner won't work, but if somebody has a point, they's better make it.

Hillery sure does have a lot of baggage if look at Bill's "Foundation Supporters". Having her as SOS will be an open conduit to our governmemt and it's most inner working. The Riadys will be back for seconds.
What can they sell to the Chinese or let the Russians buy from the Japs this time? Last time it was propeller design and multiple reentry technology just to start.

You (and others) are mistaking my beliefs concerning the appropriate strategy for regaining power with acceptance of Obama's policies. They are not the same.

Regaining power is one thing, pal. Having something left when power is regained could be another. Undoing government is nearly impossible.

We are in such a rough national situation that the Republican party just plain could not win regardless of their selection. When our invaders found no weapons of mass destruction I figured it was over for the Republican adminstration. The current fiscal situation is simply another unneeded nail in the coffin. Of the two options the Demos offered up, I'm happier with the one we have, than I would have been with their second place offer.

At sometime in the future we'll find out that McCain was not supposed to win.

I never learned what he stood for or what he wanted to do. Other then "I'm tested" and "I'm a maverick", he never said what he would do. The the financial crisis hit us in the face, he suspednded his camapign, came back to DC and did what? I still don't know.
