I will be looking at the gun show here in Vegas at the end of the month for something for my girlfriend. She likes lever guns and since I have a Savage 99 and this was obviously based on them I think she might like one. It could be her "mini 99". What is the general opinion of the Ruger 96 and how much are they going for used these days in this caliber? She just wants something that is cheap to shoot and doesn't kick. I am also consideringa 96 in .22 or ,22 Mag.

"cheap to shoot" isnt a 17hmr IMO.expecially in a lever, they seem to go through ammo a lil faster at times.
I'd be lookin for a 22lr IMO

+1 on the .22lr idea. OK guns as far as I can see and have heard. I like the idea of it being a mini 99, the do look somewhat alike.

I've got a Ruger 96 in 22 Mag. It's my favorite walking varmit rifle. I like it even better that a 10/22 Mag. that I had! Virgil B.

I picked up a NIB 96/22 in 22LR a few months ago. Dealer had it in stock for 12 years! I don't know why these are not more popular. Very smooth action and just as accurate as my 10/22s. I've got 7 22LR rifles and find myself grabbing the 96/22 more than the others. Just a fun rifle and with that plain jane stock you don't have to worry about dings.

I have the 96/17 and love it. Sweet, Smooth, and accurate...!!! I had the 96/22LR when they first cane out. Wish I still had it. I would JUMP on a 96/22mag if one comes around at the right price...

All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<
