How much weight do you guys figure I could shave by skeletonizing and fluting the bolt and fluting the barrel on my Remington 700 SPS 257 Roy? Had a buddy insert the idea of doing the bolt and now I am thinking of doing the bolt and the barrel, Kampfeld will do the work.

I check a couple of days ago and Karl was only doing off the receiver fluting on barrels. Still taking work for bolt fluting though.

Will he pull the barrel to flute it if you send him the barreled action?

What wouldn't you do, pull the barrel or the fluting?

IMO, I don't think it's worth the money to go through all that for what it will give you. After you pay all the shipping and labor costs, you still won't have a lightweight rifle. If you are really serious about shaving weight, sell the rifle and build.

You dont know the half of my insanity. I have an olive Edge on order for it and am thinking that a combination of the fluting on the bolt and barrel with some olive and black (black for the flutes) GunKote finish would look bad azz. What do ya think?

Do black with olive flutes, All that green might be too much of a good thing. Karl can pimp a bolt, get a Campfire Knob while he has it

Go for it. It looks cool. And it is just money right. The economy wouldn't be in a crisis if it wasn't for the news, that's all they seem to talk about is what is bad. NEVER anything good. Am I right.

Cub- When I did spiral fluting on a 700 LA SS, it only took off .8 oz. I did the alloy shroud thing, plus some very extreme skeletonizing on the handle (I wouldn't go that far again BTW), for a grand total of 3.46 oz. lost. I've got no idea what the bbl fluting would save, but I think either Lilja or Pac Nor has a reference chart that should get you close. My CDL .257 came w/ flutes, but I'm gonna do the bolt, Ti style.

I don't care for the idea of drilling holes in the bolt handle - how much weight could the holes save? And it seems like a great place catch and collect crud and it would probably hurt the resale value.

AlaskaCub, I think you and me must have the same taste in guns. I have a rifle at Karls right now - a 7mm08 and I told him I wanted it to look like the one you have in your picture except some of the Cerakote will be different. That one in the pic is one heck of a nice rifle - I think it belongs to someone here on the campfire??? Seems it was on a post before.

AKCUB, I agree with you, it looks great! I have a Sako that I had fluted and skeletonized, did not get the bolt done, long story, but he had my rifle alot longer than anticipated. Finally, after he blew up to me on the phone, I had him stop work and send it back.
Who is Karl? Is that Kampfire arms? I have another rifle I'd like to get done, same make, different caliber, definately different 'smith.
