Does anyone know if it's possible/practical to do a public land cow elk hunt in Wyoming? I'm assuming most of these would be late season? Or are most of the cow only areas on private land where trespass fees are the norm? It's COLD here and I'm dreaming out fall hunts so help me out!!!!

I hunted cow elk in unit 7 last year. Plenty of public land.

Jeff Some are early season, some are late, and some are during the regular rifle season. If a person watches the available license list after the resident drawings you don't even need to apply 10 months before you even have an idea whether or not you can go hunting. There's probably more public land hunting available than private, but even on the private tresspass fee's don't usually amount to much if anything as for the most part elk on private land are nothing much more that 4 footed cloven hoofed predators, and the more of them that get displaced from someones fields and haystacks the better.

Bob33,
Would you mind telling me more about your hunt. Did you camp or stay in hotels? What is the country like? Did you get your license in the draw, or on the leftover list? A private message is alright if you prefer.
thanks......Jeff

I camped, stayed with friends in Casper, and also moteled a couple nights. It depends on how close you want to be when you wake up. Casper is about a 2 hour drive, Douglas is about a 1 hour drive, and my tent is about a 30 second walk until I'm hunting.
I drew my tag in the January draw for reduced price cow/calf licenses (deadline is next Monday, by the way). I'm not sure if there were any leftover/surplus tags available in 7 or not.

Generally speaking you can have one full price and one reduced price cow/calf license in Wyoming.

Just fyi, the non-resident WY. Elk Hunt Appl. period ends 013109. Might have some leftovers this year because of the economy.
