I usually just drill out the wedge with an appropriate size bit, drilling multiple holes as close together as you can get them and then tap the old handle out with a bolt or punch, while holding the axe head in a vise.

If you don't have a vise or tools, just pitch that sucker in the fire, fish the head out and drop it in water to keep temper. Install new handle. Just like new from China. [Linked Image] -- no
------------------
A hint to the wise is sufficient! Smiles are contagious, infect everyone!

Cut the handle off, now you just have the head with the left over wood in side head. Take a hammer and some kind of blunt punch that will fit in the head, and drive the wood back out the top of the axe.
