My son and I are planning a trip to Montana for antelope this fall. This might be a stupid question but.... If only one of us gets drawn can the other purchase doe tags over the counter, or do you have to be drawn to purchase any kind of tag? Kind of confused over the regs so any help would be appreciated.
Biggame You most certainly can purchase any available doe tags, even if you didn't draw a buck tag. You can also buy doe deer tags, and a cow elk tag, even if you didn't draw anything.
If you and your son apply as a "party" for antelope then if one gets drawn you both get tags. I believe non-residents can have a party of 2 to 5. Call the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks or look up the applications on line. There are generally lots of doe/fawn tags available that are valid in any 700 district (any district starting with a 7). That encompasses most of the eastern part of the state. You can purchase the doe/fawn tags over the counter or on-line. I would suggest on-line since they are sold on a first come first serve basis.
Not all districts give out doe/fawn tags. I know 500s and 700s are pretty liberal and easy to draw and get an extra doe/fawn tag. Here is a link for 2008 regs- http://fwp.mt.gov/hunting/regulations.html download the link (deer elk antelope) in the middle of the page to get an idea of last years regs. 2009 should be on-line in mid March I believe. It will also show you drawing odds from the year before 2007. Good Luck
