Yesterday I came upon the above mentioned rifle NIB for $550. Really good deal or not?

Market price.

When it comes to choosing friends....I'm at an age where I'd rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

That's approx going rate now, if not a hair more. When the going was good, that is when the 8x57 & .300 Sav Rem 700 model Classics were lagging in sales and being blown out @ the distributor level (maybe 2 1/2 - 3 yrs ago) they could be had for around $375 - $400 shipped on GB & GunsAmerica.

Of course that was then, this is now... frown

Any one ever seen a FN Mauser in 300 Savage? I know where one is hiding and it is pristine. I hear it is the only on ever made in that caliber. Is that true? P07

I have seen one FN Mauser in .300 Savage, and actually owned
one in .250-3000. They were also made in .220 Swift, 7x57,
plus the other common calibers. I have heard of 9x57 but
never handled one. If the FN you speak of is affordable
I say grab it and store it away somewhere.
As far the 700 Classics go, the 300 Savage and the 8x57
just never caught on like the other calibers. I seldom
see the other calibers for sale, but the 300 and the 8mm
seem to be everywhere. The Remington 722 in 300 Savage
is a very fast seller in my area but the 700 Classic
gets very little attention, and in my opinion is a much
better looking rifle.

I have one of the 700 Classics in 300. It's a sweet shooter, particularly since I handload.

I have always heard that the 300 Savage was very accurrate
in a bolt action. I know a guy that has a 722 that has
been rechambered to 308, and wants to pick up a Classic
barrel in 300 Savage and have it rebarreled. I told him
it would probably be cheaper to find a complete Classic
on GB or AA, but its his money. In 1992 Remington added
the 300 Savage to the BDL lineup for one year only, and
it sold poorly. Savage has also brought this caliber back
withe Model 14 Classic w/dbm. I wonder how well it will
sell.

The problem is that people consider it an "OLD" chambering. They do not take the time to look at the ballistics and learn that it in an AWESOME cartridge...!!!

All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<

I actually have a Remington 700 classic barrrel in .300 Savage that is taking up space. How interested is you friend? The barrel is new, never shot - the rifle it came from was used in another project.
