Hello all. Just thought I'd post a few images I snapped over Thanksgiving weekend.

We didn't end up with anything that special, the light was just too dreary and the rams weren't that active. The light snow that was falling is even visible in one of the images I think.

Anyway, here's what I came up with. Hope you enjoy laugh

Nice pics. Which one was the arson?

Thank you DJ. Trust me, I'm just an everyday hack... you'll be taking images better than these in no time. Wildlife images are as easy as it gets since there's really no decisions to make. Shoot wide open, and shutter speed is KING!!! If 1/800 is good, 1/1250 is better.

Here's the data:

All were taken with a Canon 1Ds Mark III.
Lenses used were 500/4L-IS and the new 200/2L-IS.
F-stop is wide open, or at least VERY close to wide open. My telephoto lenses don't even know what f/6.3, f/7.1 or f/8.0 look like. Well, I'm sure I take a few at smaller apertures, but not many. I'll trade a slight bit of sharpness degradation that comes with shooting wide open anyday for the shallower depth of field and diffused background it provides. That's the absolute key to wildlife images IMO... separate the subject from the background for a "3-D look". Many of these don't show it too well however. Of course, depending on the surroundings, it's not always possible to create that separation. But still, those are the images I look for most. Subject to background isolation is the no.1 attribute I look for in a wildlife image.

Landscape images are difficult to master IMO, wildlife comes easy laugh

Thanks again for the comments, I'm truly flattered that you've taken a real liking to my images. If you have any other more specific questions about gear or techniques, please feel free to ask away. I'm here to help if you need it.

Did you spot and stalk theese guys or do you have to find a spot and take your chances? What's your pod set up?

Actually, we didn't have to stalk very much. From where I parked the truck they were not that far off, maybe 300 yds or so. When I headed toward them, they were really not concerned with me at all, so I just set up and shot, and they went about their business.

For tripod I'm using a Gitzo 1325 CF pod with a Wimberley II Gimbal head.

Thanks for the comments laugh

Thank you! laugh

By the way, what I meant by that comment is that I was really hoping to photograph some rutting activity... head banging laugh laugh laugh But they were rather laid back this day, just a bit too early for the rut.

Wow....gives me something to strive for...

As a beginner who just stepped into the SLR world, I can only dream of one day taking pics that look like this....
