It just so happens that my brother's boss shot this wolf in extreme NorthEast South Dakota. He did not get a shot at the larger of the two animals at the time. Nor did he take a shot at the two animal 20 or so miles away from that point a short time later. I can only presume that these are Northern Minnesota wolves that have been pressured south and west by snow, cold and shortage of prey species in their home range.
The shooter mentioned is a good guy and both an avid and ethical outdoorsman who took the lead in finding out the exact species of what he thought initially were really big yotes. At this point he has not been charged with anything.
Darn wolves must not be hurting too bad if they are showing up in South Dakota farm country of all places. Here is a quick link:
