I'm considering these for use in a few .300 Savages. I can't find any specific information as to intended velocities. The best I can get is a blurb from Midway stating the Mag Tip is designed to expand at lower velocity.

Anybody have an info or experience with 'em?

Velocities should be around 2600 fps, give or take.

I saw a test of 30 cal bullets a few years ago and if I remember correctly they held together very well up to mag velocity. They are a little shorter than most 150s so should work well in you 300 savage. I have been shooting 165 rem corlokts.

Those are the hot-cor bullets that are loaded in Federal Powershok ammo. They have always worked well in my .308's.

I shoot, and hunt with, 150 grain HotCors in three of my 99's in 300 Savage. I load them all with 43 grains of RL 15 for a velocity of about 2650 fps. They work very well. I may be wrong, but I thought the Mag Tip bullet was designed to be shot in cartridges such as the .300 Win Mag. The flat or shortened tip allows the bullet to be seated properly in the short necked but long overall .300 Win Mag cartridge and still fit in the magazine. In regards to expansion or performance at certain velocities, I don't think there's any advantage to using Mag Tips in a 300 Savage versus regular ole' HotCors.

I used to use the 180 Mag tip in my .06 @ 2650 fps. It worked very well, it's BC is about like an oatmeal cookie but other than that I really like the bullet.

I appreciate all the responses.

Here is the blurb from Midway.

"Speer's Mag-Tip fluted jacket and flat tip provide better expansion at velocities lower than many spitzers, yet its heavy jacket shank allows you to shoot these at very high velocities before bullet breakup occurs. "

I wish part of the information that bullet manufacturers offered was performance at different velocities.

Maybe I can throw a few of 'em on the ground and bait a bear in, bears love cookies. grin

If I am quoting the speer manual correctly, the mag tip was designed to remedy nose deformation during firing. The performance or expansion envelope is pretty broad for that bullet though, and I like it as a game bullet.

Like dober says though, the BC on that bullet is nearly square. Shouldn't matter at the distances you will be using a .300 Savage.

Good luck with it,
CT

Wish I'd have thought of that. blush

I haven't bought any yet, but it's one of only a few that are actually "in stock". This thread has certainly bolstered my willingness to try 'em, square BC and all. As stated, the range of the .300 Savage lends itself to this bullet...I think.

My Speer manuel says the Mag-tips work better at lower impact velocities than their regular Hot Cores. The heavier bases of their jackets tend to make them hold together better at higher impact velocities. Specially recommended for the .300 Savage by Speer. E

There you go!
If I were loading for a .300 savage, it would probably be the bullet I would look for.

I used up some mag tips in a 7x57, 160 grainers, pushed hard at about 2600 ( just guessing, I prefer to live in ignorant bliss without a chronograph) and got excellent performance out of them.Like Dober said, the BC is like a cookie, and you really noticed the drop after 200 yds.
