This is actually a reloading question but since it pertains specifically to the Savage Model 1899, I thought I'd start here. First, my rifle was made in 1900 or 1901(depending on which database you use) and is chambered in 30-30. Second, my question relates to attempting to increase the velocity of the amunition somewhat. The pressures relating to 30-30 factory ammunition are held to under 40,000 psi whereas pressures for the 300 Savage (introduced by Savage some 20 years later in the model 99) can go as high as 46,000 psi from factory ammunition. I am wondering if anyone can tell me with certainty that there is/is not any strength difference in the receivers/actions of these two models of virtually the same rifle. I would appreciate a response from anyone who has any factual data from the archives. I realize this info is probably older than any of us. LOL, Thanks much.

unclecracker, In 1908 savage changed the rear of the bolt rounding it creating a radius, the earlier square cut rifles have had the receiver crack on the back left hand corner, i have seen a few with cracks, Also around 1920 they changed their receiver heat treating process to strengthen the action. I wouldn't try to reload any of the older receivers above factory loadings. Don

According to his post count, Loggah is an old 30-30 also!

All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<

Ha! that's good.
unclecracker, I wouldn't try to take an old one above the factory. Even loading it really hot, you're not going to get that much of a velocity boost. I wouldn't even do it to a modern rifle..
What it really sounds like you need to do is to buy a 300 Savage. Lots of 99's out there in that caliber.

Thanks to those responding to my original questions. I accept the advice and have come to believe I could accomplish more with good aerodynamic bullets than I ever could with a slight increase in velocity. I have restored this old family handmedown and my intention is to shoot and enjoy it before I pass it on. Was curious but just wanted to be safe. Thanks again.

My reply is a long time coming! No real experience at this. Back when I had made my original post I had come across a bunch of pictures showing a great deal of parts and many different examples with explanation of dates of use etc. I went back to refer to those pictures and refresh my memory on some items and I find the page has moved and I don't know how to get there. Would anyone know what I am referring to and be able to direct me there? Would appreciate it very much! For what it's worth, took the thing hunting and got my deer with it. It worked well and I was happy!!

May be in the Misc Good Things sticky, above? Look down the postings to one starting with Tal35. If you have problems with PhotoBucket photos note the top posting in the above stickys by Rick Binn.
