I did my part for this country when many were spotting diapers. You need to chill a bit. We're all friends here and have real problems with what this country has come to. If it makes you feel better to insult some good members, have at it.

Hi: Unless I'm mistaken (and I'm not) Bill and Hillary were both renowned for dissing the military, especially the marines at the WH. Bill rarely, if ever, saluted or showed respect. Guess it comes with the mind-set these folks have. BTW, remember that big brother watcheth us all and listeneth as well, no doubt. I certainly feel anger towards those who show disdain for our warriors but try to watch my tongue in public settings like this one. Best

Feel free to clue me in as I was never in the military, but I thought saluting was reserved for those who had served in the military. Believe me, I'm not offering up an excuse for the scumbag, because personally the thought of him as our POTUS is enough to make me want to vomit. Just curious as to the protocol for the Commander in Chief when he never served in the military. Doesn't matter if he served or not. He's just being clueless.

Let me put another take on it, and honestly I make no excuses for Obama.
Just for a minute, if I were to be elected POTUS, having never served in the military, I might find it a little uncomfortable to salute a soldier who salutes me, not out of disrespect, but out of respect for his service and a lack of my own. Wouldn't some think it phony of him to salute as if he is one with the military, when he has never served?
I realize the argument that he is now the commander and chief, but in all honesty as much as I respect the military I would feel a little uneasy returning a salute, but would be more at ease stopping in front of him and shaking his hand and thanking him for his service.

The salute is a form of military "courtesy." It is at least polite to return a courtesy.

Well having never served I would feel a tad phony doing so would rather show my respects as a civilian. I have just thought that only military or ex-military have the right to salute somebody...however the point is taken that Obama should acknowledge in some way, and not ignore the salute, even if just a handshake.

It is unfortunate that 'our' president can show no courtesy to the military that has made this country a place that he can serve in highest office.
More unfortunate, in my estimation, is that Kennedy wasn't spreading around the "family planning" money in Kenya...somewhere around 1961, or Hawaii...just to cover the bases.

Yup maybe. I saw Obama as he entered Marine 1 on Thursday. He approached the Marine at the steps and saluted to him, talked to him then shook the Marines hand. The Marine shook his hand said something back to him and went back to his salute. That was pretty classy to me. I am not sure if you are supposed to do that though.

I don't remember Nixon saluting very much .... most of the time when he departing or arriving he waved the 'peace' sign. Spiffy Ride "Departing from the South Lawn, Obama broke from tradition as he boarded Marine One, the presidential helicopter. He seemed to stun the Marine standing at attention by reaching out to shake his hand. The Marine obliged, shaking the president's hand before returning to a steady salute." Military Salute "Salutes are not required when: Indoors, except when reporting to an officer or when on duty as a guard Addressing a prisoner When a salute is obviously inappropriate. An example would be if a person is carrying objects in both hands or is otherwise occupied. In these cases, a verbal greeting should be exchanged. Either the senior member or the subordinate is wearing civilian clothing."
