Bead blasting is the way to go.... I'm going to have my .264 WM done with Aluminum Oxide.

Most decent sized shops will have a bead-blast cabinet. Amost any machine shop and many automotive shops. You can always pop in there and see if they will do it. Make sure you protect the crown it you let someone other than a gunsmith do it though.
I borrowed the cabinet at an aircraft maintenance shop to do a barrel once.

Bead blasting is fine if you can ever get all of the material out of the gun. A couple of people on this forum, if you look around, manually use the synthetic finishing pads to put a brushed finish on their revolvers. To keep the brushing straight, I would get one of the synthetic wheels (same material) for a bench grinder and do it that way. Might be able to talk a 'smith into doing it that way.

Bead blasting is the answer. Have a couple of SS barreled rifles so done. If you don't want to do the bead blasting, a maroon scotch brite pad will do.

There are several different types of media to use depending on the finish you want. You can get rather coarse or a satin smoother finish. You could also go to a wire wheel with lubrication and take the sheen down some.Protect any barrel stampings you want to preserve.

I got a media blaster from Harbour Freight for $19. The media was another $25. A cabinet is about $100. I use my nail gun compressor and it works fine for small stuff. Ken

+1 on the Krylon...They make a "Special Purpose" spray paint for camo applications...I generally use the Olive Drab...if you want to remove it just wipe some brake fluid on & let it sit for a half hour or so.
